Seventeen years ago, when she flew in to Los Angeles airport from China, she was a raw 19-year-old, indistinguishable from so many others in the immigration queue, facing up to a future with no family, few friends and fewer prospects – barely able even to speak the language of her new country.

Today, Wendi Deng is one of the most powerful people in the world.

For six years she has enjoyed a billionaire's lifestyle as the wife of Rupert Murdoch. Now she looms as a commanding figure in a generational crisis which will determine the future of what is arguably the largest global media company on the planet.

Her new status has emerged amid remarkable revelations from the Murdoch family after Lachlan Murdoch, the son groomed to take Rupert Murdoch's mantle, resigned as deputy chief operating officer of News Corp and bowed out of the succession race.

If Lachlan is a loser, the huge winner has been Ms Deng, his father's third wife.

Six years ago, rather than fighting out a torrid court battle for a half-share in the Murdoch shareholding, Rupert's second wife, Anna, worked out an agreement whereby the four adult children – Prudence McLeod, Elisabeth, Lachlan and James Murdoch – would share (with various charities) about 90 per cent of the proceeds of the Harris trust, or about $US1.4 billion a piece.

Each child would appoint a director of the trustee company, Cruden Financial Services, while Rupert appointed four directors who would resign after his death. Under this arrangement, Ms Deng and her children were limited to inheriting shares worth $US840 million.

But for the past year, Rupert has been planning to reshape the trust structure to put Grace and Chloe, his two young children with Ms Deng, on an equal footing with the other siblings. That would be just over $US1 billion each.

But it also means Chloe and Grace would have two directors on the trustee company. Crucially, till they reached 30, the two directors would be controlled by their mother.

That move would give Ms Deng one-third of the board seats. It's not majority control, but it would clearly make her the first among equals. Any further children would only strengthen that position.

The family is now divided. News insiders in the past week have said repeatedly that the four children are happy to share the inheritance equally with Chloe and Grace, but not to overturn the power-sharing arrangements: "It's not about the money, it's about control." However, like their father's statement, this is not so much an outcome as a way of detailing the battle lines.

Rupert's adult children and their partners have always been sensitive about their relationship with their new stepmother, after their father's divorce from Anna degenerated into a bitter fight between lawyers.

Socially, Ms Deng has none of Anna Murdoch's smooth charm. She is tall, an awkward dresser, more charming in person than she appears in photos and who speaks with heavily accented English. At the same time she projects enormous energy and focus, and a sense that she probably has more intelligence, street smarts and raw hunger for success than all the other Murdoch offspring combined.

Deng Wen Di, as she was originally known, was born in Xuzhou, in eastern China, before her family moved to the booming southern province of Guangdong, where her father was the director of a machinery factory.

In 1988 she arrived in Los Angeles to do an undergraduate degree at the University of California, sponsored by an American couple, Jake and Joyce Cherry, who had helped her learn English when they lived in China. The Cherrys separated and later divorced after Jake Cherry, 53, became infatuated with Ms Deng, whom he married in February 1990.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Ms Deng moved out after four or five months and moved in with a man in his 20s, David Wolf, though the divorce did not come through till September 1992.

According to former News executive Bruce Dover, Ms Deng was also married to Mr Wolf, apparently during the time she did an MBA at Yale, before she won an internship in Hong Kong with News Corp's Star TV satellite operation in 1996 which led to a position there, where she met Mr Murdoch in late 1997.

I think Rupert Murdoch is too old to inseminate anyone. Wendi Deng is a ruthlessly calculative power-hunger woman. She knows a child--especially a boy because Murdoch is well-known to have a strong bias for male heirs--would cement her power grab. So, if Murdoch was too old to have a child, then she would just have to resort to artificial insemination to have one. She has two girls with Murdoch now.
