I noticed that Chu Nom is often mentioned so i decided to make a topic just for Chu Nom (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/icon_smile.gif) . For those who dont know Chu Nom is an old script created by Vietnamese for Vietnamese. Discuss whatever you want about it here. You can also check out the Nom Preservation Foundation website HERE. There's a Nom look up tool there too. So play around with it, try to make phrases, or whatever. Enjoy. (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

(IMG:http://www.omniglot.com/images/langnames/nm_chunom.gif) A good website about the history and background on Chu Nom. Short and sweet. Also many links to Chu Nom-related sites. This post has been edited by Kulong: Mar 2 2004, 11:43 AM |

QUOTE (WhoAmI @ Mar 3 2004, 09:41 PM) (IMG:http://nomdb.cafe68t.net/image/Nom23006.jpg) (IMG:http://nomdb.cafe68t.net/image/Nom26199.jpg) (IMG:http://nomdb.cafe68t.net/image/Nom26122.jpg) (IMG:http://nomdb.cafe68t.net/image/Nom25938.jpg) There's my attempt at Chu Nom (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/icon_smile.gif) . I'm not sure if its right (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/cry2.gif) but at least i tried. anyways, it's suppose to read "chúc m?ng n?m m?i" which is the english equivalent to something like Happy New Year. (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Here it is again from top to bottom style. (IMG:http://nomdb.cafe68t.net/image/Nom23006.jpg) (IMG:http://nomdb.cafe68t.net/image/Nom26199.jpg) (IMG:http://nomdb.cafe68t.net/image/Nom26122.jpg) (IMG:http://nomdb.cafe68t.net/image/Nom25938.jpg) Oh, WhoAmI, that is so awesome! I've been wondering what each of those words meant when I learned that phrase two years ago haha. Now it all makes sense (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/icon_smile.gif) The first character is a Chu Nho, it literally means "to wish (someone something)" The rest are Chu Nom. I'm not sure if the second character is correct. It has a heart radical, which usually indicates feelings or emotions and a character of "ming" next to it, which literally means "bright or clear". Maybe it means to wish someone a "bright" new year? The third character I assume means "year" because it has the character "nian" which means year on the right while a "nan" on the left indicating how it's pronounced in Vietnamese, which is "nam". The fourth character has a "shi" on top, which means "beginning or start" and a "mai" on the bottom indicating the Vietnamese pronouncation of "moi". Very cool stuff! (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/icon_smile.gif) Got any more, WhoAmI? Hehe, how about "happy birthday"? |

QUOTE (WhoAmI @ Mar 3 2004, 11:47 PM) (IMG:http://nomdb.cafe68t.net/image/Nom21441.jpg) (IMG:http://nomdb.cafe68t.net/image/Nom21373.jpg) Cam on! (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Thanks for your input Kulong. (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) Let's see, "Happy Birthday" in Vietnamese would be "Chuc mung sinh nhat". So i think it would be: (IMG:http://nomdb.cafe68t.net/image/Nom23006.jpg) (IMG:http://nomdb.cafe68t.net/image/Nom26199.jpg) (IMG:http://nomdb.cafe68t.net/image/Nom22800.jpg) (IMG:http://nomdb.cafe68t.net/image/Nom21890.jpg) Sinh and Nhat appear to be regular Chu Nho. I'm hoping i got (mung) the second one right like you mentioned before. i guess i'll try to look into it again later im sleepy now haha. Anyways, I think i'll try to come up with more later. (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/icon_smile.gif) (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) So that's what "cam on" means! Hahaha... I've always wondered but most Vietnamese-Americans I know only knows it means "thank you" (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/icon_rolleyes.gif) Same with chuc mung sinh nhat (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/icon_smile.gif) Yeah, "sinh nhat" are in Chu Nho because we use that in Chinese too, "shengri". |
