I am unequivocally opposed to an Islamic state. A theocracy is basically designed with God as the ruler, ruling through his delegate(s) on Earth. Even if this is not obvious, it becomes so once a malicious politician seizes power and begins issuing orders on his whims just because "God said so". I have nothing against Islam, but theocracy is a government system inherently lacking checks and balances, because who will check God or his rulers on Earth? Therefore, all it takes is someone corrupt or evil to seize power and misuse it, and everything goes down the tube.
I do agree a strong opposition is important. But the opposition must do more than oppose for the sake of opposing. Unfortunately, that is all the DAP and PAS appear to do most of the time. It doesn't help much that in Parliament, they tend to focus on issues the common man has trouble relating to. I read the blogs of Fong Po Kuan and Lim Kit Siang regularly, and based on Lim's blog, it would seem to the average man that all the DAP is doing is blowing hot air in parliament. That (and a myriad of other factors) are why the opposition never really gets going here. True, gerrymandering, illegal practices, etc. also contribute, but the opposition isn't helping itself much either. The way I see it, the best we can hope for is getting the average man who can't stomach voting for the opposition to just spoil his vote. Spoilt votes are counted in the tallies, and people do notice when their numbers rise. Furthermore, they will not topple the government (the worst fear of many really cowardly voters) but will reduce the government's majority and mandate. Right now, that's the best we can hope for. |

QUOTE (caramel @ Nov 5 2005, 04:38 PM) (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/icon_confused.gif) Fishy. Malaysia is already an Islamic country. Anyone who try to change the status quo is an enemy of Islam.
Do you think it is because they want to scare the M'sians esp. Chinese to vote for Barisan instead? I think the Chinese at the moment are the ones who are vote swingers. So I think if they let Kelantan to be held by PAS, they can make a comparison for example how under developed M'sia will be under their ruling? Also, they always use the tactic that M'sia will be 100% Islamic country when they are ruled by PAS. |

I disgree. Last time I checked, the constitution only enshrines Islam as our official religion, but specifies us as a secular state. We are secular with elements of Islam.

Well... I think Keadilan gonna be a good oppsition but they are really weak now.. |

Iron Malayan:
I find that comment most perturbing. Is it not common knowledge Saudi Arabia and Iran are far more Islamic than Malaysia, with the former the birthplace of Islam? Anyway, do you remember the MP that called Indians "keling"? He's also said "Malaysia ini negara Islam, you tak suka, you keluar dari Malaysia!" Videos are available here, but you need to scroll a bit down. |

Well, it's not what it originally meant but what it is perceived to mean today. I still remember my form one moral teacher angrily lecturing a couple of my classmates just because they used the word "keling". Think of it in a different light - the swastika is a traditional Buddhist symbol, but was hijacked by the Nazis. Are people justified in publicly wearing swastika symbols and then justifying it by saying "it's actually not insulting...it's Buddhist!" ?

It will be very interesting to see the result of by election in the Pengkalan Pasir constituency.
In the last election PAS managed to beat BN by only 55 votes. This post has been edited by Iron Malayan: Nov 18 2005, 02:34 PM |
