I saw the traditional dance of Philippines many times on Viet tv before. It looks great, and attracted me always from the beginning to the end.
About Thai dance, and Cambodian dance, i was acusstomed to them since i was little... They are great! I like a lot. Thank you for the helpful thread. Go on posting! (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) |

Yup. The reason why Vietnamese dance and outfits and culture is different from the rest of south east asia i.e, thailand, cambodia, burma, laos, philippines, indonesia etc is that vietnam is a highly sinocized country. The country was under chinese cultural/political domination for over a millenia and has been amalgamated to chinese philosophy. CHinese confucian idelogy, which is a trait shared by all sinosized countries such as Japan, Korea, China proper, Taiwan and Vietnam are evident. South east asian countries are primarily indic by culture. Our culture, dance arts and styles are that of Indian decent and are borrowed from India. Hence the term 'Indo-China'; literally the cross roads of the two great asian civilizations; India and China.
The reason why the cham dance is similar to that of the khmer and thai dance is that the cham were hindus and were a hindu kingdom of southern vietnam at the time; and its culture, arts etc were very similar to that of Angkor, Ayudhaya and Lan Xang. Yes, Vietnam's dances are quintessentially Sinid in form, yet has its own distinct Kinh style. I do love vietnamese culture; its rather exotic. |

Ive done my history already with chinese rule blah blah one thousand years...,,,,,,naval state , paying tribute , etc.....rebillions ....but still remain and perserve our culture and identity Yes ur right .. it is Chinese confucian ideology as of Taoism, and Buddhism ( Mahayana ) while SEA were influenced by India and China but I think more from India as its evident in the influence of khmer , thai and laos languange, and buddhism ( Theravada )... remeber the french missionaries and their catholic influence during when vietnam was a colony for a short time.......... lots of catholic viets................ But wouldn't Indo China be more spefically to the rest of SEA then Vietnam since the country was more influenced by chinese ....... although land is in SEA.... I dont know if viet culture is that much sinid .... is it really that much of differences between the chinese......... I know viets ao dais are really colorful and uses more linens and fabric. as shown in their dresses ............ U still consider Vietnam as SEA even though it has East asian culture....... while located in SEA ..... thats what makes the country very unique from other countries... not sayng were special though....... Its like NEA meets SEA basically ... cuz I think viets are mix of both and that we are the gate between NEA and SEA countries......... I got that from some articles I read long ago This post has been edited by Viety Cent: Nov 9 2005, 07:47 PM |

Yes.
Vietnamese are culturally east asians; very confucian. However, ethnically speaking. The country of vietnam is a melting pot of different ethnc groups be it cham, khmer krom, tai ethnics (thai/lao people), kinh, ethnic chinese, ameriasians etc. Vietnamese Kinh are an austroloid/mongoloid people; and are the result of the intermixing of mongolic people and the previous austronesiatic negritos of the region. Vietnam is truly an interesting nation; with such a complex culture and people. I love it ! I hate the government, but I love the people and the different cultures from south to north vietnam. Our South East Asian brothers! |

I wasnt saying that the vietnamese people are complete mixed with negrito, what I meant was that our ancestors, intermingled with the pre-existing civilizations such as the cham, which had its own linkage to negritos and the malays of peninsular malaysia/java.
So you're in Canada right now huh? 15 years is a long time to be in dominion of canada, bro. As for me Im 20 years old; studying in the united states for bio/history. lol im a pre-med. What college do you go to, bro? _____________________________________________________ I must say, very beautiful picture of the cambodian dance! Angkor wat is supremely magnificent. Here's some small pics, from an article I read a while ago, very brief descriptions:
(IMG:http://www.thailander.com/arts/thaidance/images/blessingdance.jpg) Blessing dance, dancers shower the audience with fragrant flowers, sort of like a well-wishing thing. (IMG:http://www.thailander.com/arts/thaidance/images/dhvaravati1.jpg) Dhvaravati dance, an archaelogical reconstruction inpired from reliefs and carvings. (IMG:http://www.thailander.com/arts/thaidance/images/srivichai1.jpg) Sri Vijayan dance, goes back a millenia, influenced southern Thai and Malaysian areas. (IMG:http://www.thailander.com/arts/thaidance/images/lopburi1.jpg) Lop Buri dance, an ancient dance dating back to the 11-14th century. Inspired by Angkorian Empire. (IMG:http://www.thailander.com/arts/thaidance/images/sukhothai1.jpg) Sukhothai dance, a mixture of ancient Thai and Khmer influences, flourished in the 14-15th century. (IMG:http://www.thailander.com/arts/thaidance/images/fonleb.jpg) Fon Leb dance, long fingernails and pastel costumes reflect the beauty and serenity of the Northern Thais. (IMG:http://www.thailander.com/arts/thaidance/images/fonpan.jpg) Fon Pan dance, Simple costumes and dances reflect everyday life in the countryside. (IMG:http://www.thailander.com/arts/thaidance/images/fonmalai.jpg) Fon Malai, Formal dance, used to welcome important guests. (IMG:http://www.thailander.com/arts/thaidance/images/fonngeow.jpg) Fon Ngaew, traditional dance of Northern tribes, usually a welcoming or well-wishing dance. (IMG:http://www.thailander.com/arts/thaidance/images/chowkhow.jpg) Rabam Chaw Khaw, from the Lisu tribe, very entertaining and informal. More after I come home. |
