QUOTE (Sirikittong @ Nov 9 2005, 06:19 PM) The Socialist Republic of Vietnam (former) Empire of Nam Viet (IMG:http://www.misu.ait.ac.th/NewsAndEvents/newsletterData/HTMLFormat/iss3no16/Welcome08.jpg) Cham viet dance Hmm actually Vietnam has no typical dance. Except for the ethnic dance as Cham dance and Bamboo dance (bamboo is very common dance in vietnam) I think the picture above is not Cham dance, im very familiar to Cham dance coz my mom is apsara dancer. I think the picture is from Malaysia. Bamboo dance (Múa sạp). I hardly find picture on net. @ Sirikit: Thank u for sharing this thread its really helpful.
Im proud to be a Vietnamese and proud of our culture as well. But actually i feel unhappy due to too much chinese influence in vietnam... One professor said "In Vietnam history, the Indian influence was received spontaneously. Meanwhile Vietnamese was compelled to receive Chinese culture for existing and fighting through the centuries".. I feel some sad when thinking we are cuturally different from other SEAsian countries... Its too Sino! One of my cousin once twisted her face with me while reading her history textbook, saying me "Chinese chinese why always chinese in history book? Why Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, Burma ect.. all have indian influence and we have less?" i answered her. "You still look very Southeast asian and less chinese look on ur face Lien(her name). And above of all ur a real Viet". She laughed! This post has been edited by khaviet: Nov 10 2005, 03:45 AM |

QUOTE (Sirikittong @ Nov 9 2005, 07:55 PM) Yes. Vietnamese are culturally east asians; very confucian. However, ethnically speaking. The country of vietnam is a melting pot of different ethnc groups be it cham, khmer krom, tai ethnics (thai/lao people), kinh, ethnic chinese, ameriasians etc. Vietnamese Kinh are an austroloid/mongoloid people; and are the result of the intermixing of mongolic people and the previous austronesiatic negritos of the region. Vietnam is truly an interesting nation; with such a complex culture and people. I love it ! I hate the government, but I love the people and the different cultures from south to north vietnam. Our South East Asian brothers! the vietnamese didnt mix with the negritos (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/Talktohand.gif) get ur facts rite most look mongolid 2 (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/Talktohand.gif) more vietnamese dancing (IMG:http://p.vtourist.com/2047339-Travel_Picture-Hue.jpg) (IMG:http://p.vtourist.com/2043982-Travel_Picture-Hue.jpg) (IMG:http://www.elfor.ru/img/news/wfg-2002-1.jpg) (IMG:http://www.davidson.edu/student/organizations/ISA/intfestival/pictures/vietnamese%20dance2.jpg) (IMG:http://www.asiaarts.ucla.edu/040206/images/tet1/tet-la2.jpg) (IMG:http://www.vvrp.org/Images/200204-TeamXVII-E011.jpg) (IMG:http://img.meetup.com/photos/event/b/4/f/4/event_166324.jpeg) chinese dancing is very nice 2! Offtopic : Get facts straight. Negrito s were not Austronesian. And the isolated negritos tribes who were in Thailand and Malaysia before the Malays came spoke Austro-Asiatic (mon-khmer ).
On topic : An interesting article : QUOTE However, the most important influence in the emergence of a Khmer classical performing arts tradition, both directly and by way of the Indonesian archipelago, was that of India. QUOTE The story was to come full circle in the 19th century, when Khmer King Ang Duong (1796-1859) sought to restructure Cambodian court act with the assistance of experts from Thailand. This would explain the recent Siamese influence in many aspects of Khmer classical theatre, otherwise the purest of the Javanese- derived performance traditions to found in the region. Interesting relation why Khmer and Thai are similair today. Some things are not Indic. Pinpeat /Piphat music ensemble is based on Indonesian Gamelan orchestra and unknown in India : QUOTE Comprising a maximum of 10 musicians it share many structural features with the gamelan of the Malay world on which it was based bringing together various –sized graded gong chimes set into circular rattan frame known as khong wong with wooden xylophones know as roneat meat allophones suspended gong drums cymbal and wind instruments such as double –reed oboe known as the sralai (formerly call pi shanai) the pin peat gave rise to other type of khmer ensemble including the klang chnak and plaeng knong schoor orchestra which are associated with funeral rites and string dominate phaeng mahoari orchestra, which was traditionally associated temple ceremony and offering to the gods. The pin peat is believe to have been the inspiration behind the Thai and laos piphat and the Burmise hsiang. All the above things from this long interesting article about Khmer and Thai music/dance : http://ez9.ez-web-hosting.com/~cambodia/re...ssicaldance.php Good work, guys. Maybe Majapahitans can show some pics too (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) This post has been edited by TonyL: Nov 10 2005, 06:59 PM |

Thanks for your insight, TonyL. All explanaitions and info as well as pictures are truly welcome! The more the better.
@Khaviet I know what you mean, and I know that you vietnamese had to fight the chinese time and time again throughout history. It is very sad sometimes when I see how chinese claim vietnamese to be a 'cheap copy'. Vietnam, although is sinicized in means of culture, has its own fabric of society and etiquettes that are unheard of in China. Vietnam's location in south east asia is truly the epitome of east meets west. Where a culture of south/western asia meets the culture of northeast asia. Keep it going guys! |

Hey nice threads you got here...... (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/biggthumpup.gif)
Really bringing Southeast Asia together. Here's presenting Republic of Indonesia Ultimate Diversity QUOTE Indonesia-13,500 islands. This sprawling archipelago's motto is 'Unity in Diversity' Tribal Animism-Dinamism, Hindu, Buddhist, Islam, Christianity. In a sprawling archipelago the size of Indonesia, with the fourth largest population in the world, the ethnic diversity is understandably equally vast. Over the centuries there has been an influx of peoples from China, India, Arabia, Polynesia, Indochina and Europe, generating an ethnic map that ranges from the pale Arab-influenced Sumatrans to the ebony Irian Jayans, plus many variations in between. The resulting 336 ethnic groups, connected by the common "national" language, each retain a strong sense of individual tribal identity combined with a tolerance for 'other villages, other customs', or 'Lain Desa lain adat'. About 300 languages and dialects are spoken in Indonesia, but Bahasa Indonesia is the official and most widely spoken tongue. Bahasa Indonesia (official, modified form of Malay), English, Dutch, local dialects - the most widely spoken of which is Javanese. Really nice thread!! (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/love2.gif) One of the things that I've noticed is that the fingers of the dancers are always wide spread. Another thing is that in most of these dances they wear those golden items all over them. Are these also part of the Indic influence?
