Too difficult to explain in short sentences, but this was a very bad combination of ambition of a military dictator and student leftist movement. Student demonstrations were used as an excuse by ex-president Jun Du Hwan to mobilize the army and focus the authority of the state to the military, which he controlled at the time. The excessively brutal repression caused recoil from the civilians of Gwang Ju city, and for several days, the city of practically engaged in urban combat with the paratroopers.

The movement of Gwang Ju and following civilian actions are hailed as being the primary reason authoritarian government was crushed in South Korea, and democratic movement finally took root in mind of the people as well as in appearances. Ju Du Hwan was tried in the mid 90s and was jailed for life, but was released by a presidential pardon. A very, very dark smudge in South Korean leadership.

i could upload and scan the very credited book i have on it. there was a buildup tension of this incident. people were killed over these tensions before the main breakout. the actual count surpassed 500. however many sources estimate 2000. i can send you the book pages through PM. even in the korean war the numbers (casualities) were still believed by many to be understated

my sources were backed up with international sources. oh.. and showing a picture of the research center isnt gonna do anything (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/embarassedlaugh.gif) my family knows more about it because they were originally from kwangju. tension was built up. dead people were found bunched together from this incident before the final showdown.

kwangju incident for dummies:

chun's military dictatorship after coup of previous dictatorship -> students, mostly in kwangju, organize to demonstrate against the totalitarian govnt ("where's the democracy and freedom america promised?")-> chun secretly dispatches a large portion of ROK troops at the DMZ to kwangju -> Despite continuing suppression, the movement grows bigger -> Chun decides to shut them up for good -> Huge demo suppressed by HEAVILY ARMED TROOPS WHO WERE FED TOXINS(rat poison?) TO MAKE THEM EXTREMELY VIOLENT AND MERCILESS, AND YES, BY THE GOVNT -> mass slaughter against male and female students, and even children and the old bystanders -> whole incident covered up and the rest of south koreans didnt hear any of it from their heavily controlled media, while koreans in america and north korea hear about it through the news -> America condones the incident, mildly scolding Chun but supporting his friendly regime -> reparations made after democratization in south korea -> Chun sentenced but shortly after released, due to remnants of his corrupt support in south korea's govnt

I don't think the numbers would be underestimated because it comes from a thorough research conducted when Kim Dae-Joong was the president...if you understand Korean politics you will now what I mean... (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/icon_smile.gif)

^ i understand. but even several american sources conducting numbers of the death tolls in the korean war say their initial death toll counts may be totally underestimated.
