Japan seeks to scrap law that bans it from having an army
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml...3/ixportal.html Japan's ruling party unveiled plans yesterday to revise its constitutional commitment to pacifism and allow the country to establish armed forces "for self defence. The proposals would end Japan's renunciation of the right to maintain an army, as enshrined in the constitution imposed by America after the Second World War. The Liberal Democratic Party has spent years drafting a revision of the post-war constitution to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the party's founding. The party has dominated the country since it was set up, ruling Japan for the past century save for a period of a few months. "The Americans compiled the current Japanese constitution in a mere nine days," Yoshiro Mori, a major figure in creating the proposals, said. "We cannot possibly say the constitution was created by the Japanese people's own hands. Finally, the time has come for us to compile our own constitution." The constitution currently states: "The Japanese people for ever renounce war as a sovereign right of the nation and the threat or use of force as means of settling international disputes. "Land, sea, and air forces, as well as other war potential, will never be maintained." The new draft keeps the commitment to peace but recognises the military as crucial to maintaining it. It says: "In order to secure peace and the independence of our country as well as the security of the state and the people, military forces for self-defence shall be maintained. In addition, the defence forces can take part in efforts to maintain international peace and security under international co-operation." In the 240,000-strong Self Defence Forces, Japan already has a military in all but name. But constitutional revision would regularise its status, sweep away restrictions and enable it to play a bigger role. The defence minister would also be upgraded to a member of the cabinet. A clear legal basis would be created for non-combat missions overseas, such as reconstruction in Iraq and logistical support for the American-led war in Afghanistan. "We need to take up the challenges of strife and conflict that may face international society over the next 50 years," Junichiro Koizumi, the prime minister, said. Any move away from pacifism is likely to be viewed with suspicion in Asian countries that suffered from Japanese aggression in the Second World War. China and South Korea have denounced what they see as recent signs of resurgent militarism in Japan, particularly Mr Koizumi's visits to the nationalist Yasukuni shrine, which honours Japan's war dead. But a majority of Japanese feels that such fears are overblown and that Japan has the right to become a "normal country" with normal military forces. Constitutional revision will be resisted by Japan's small communist and socialist parties. But it is expected to pass through parliament with the necessary two thirds majority because of backing from the main opposition party, the Democrats, and the LDP. It must then be approved in a referendum. |

My assumption is that given Japan's economical and technological superiorities, Japan can produce superior weapons and develop military quickly to dominate the world if the no army ban were lift. I meant if Japan wants to end its military ban, I bet very soon Germany also will want its ban on military to be ended too. We might have WWIII maybe in 20 years. Both of these countries are known for militaristic aggressiveness.

Like building mechs and weapons that can fire with unlimited ammos? watching too many Gundam and Robotech episodes can't be good for you. This post has been edited by aaaw: Nov 23 2005, 11:03 AM |

QUOTE (SniperWZ @ Nov 23 2005, 10:54 AM) You mean it has a constitution but no constitutional arms ban right? Speaking of that, wasn't Germany one of the major proponents on keeping the EU arms ban on China? It's only natural for Japan to rebuild its military. You can't be a superpower without one. |

Yep, and German is not full of unrepentant militarists like Japan, other countries bordering Germany, including even Poland, do not resent or hate the country today. Can't say the same for Japan. The new kanzler, Angela Merkel, opposes lifting the arms ban, but her predecessor Schroeder actually was one of the driving forces to lift the ban this past summer.

you guys don't have to worry about japan, they WONT be the first to attack anyone. they are currently a democratic and peaceful nation. go to japan and see for your self.
in fact, it is china, the mainland chinese is a very very very NATIONALISTIC nation with alot of unreasonable ambitions. china is the ones you have to be concerned with. and if japan is forced to invent new weapons. it will be top gun, that i am sure you all are aware of. |

LOL bring it on! If a single Japanese soldier ever sets foot on Chinese or Korean soil again, the magic button will be pressed and those islands will be forever gone.

Always so trigger happy with nukes lol. You get nukes in the hope of never using them, serving only as a deterrent.
Japan can produce superior weapons, but they're damn expensive (their homegrown tank is the most expensive in the world, etc). |

if you all go to japan , you will see, currently in the year 2005, japan is a nation of NERDS and geeks. Most of the guys don't even know how to get a girlfriend, let alone think about killing anyone.
obviously you all don't travel much. democratic nations do invade other nations, but japan is NOT one of them. namely USA in iraq. furthermore, judging from the robotic innovations in japan, if china and japan goes to war, you will see robotic soldiers from japan. and don't even bring up nukes. everyone's got them. and finally , i hate national right winged japanese equally i hate national right winged mainland chinese. both of you are exactly the same. you guys are the exactly reason, why there is a military buildup in asia. |

And I bet you want to be one of those robotic soldiers and fight for your masters in Japan.. Is this your way of trying to enter into the Yasukuni shrine and be with your masters for eternity? Too bad that will never happen, since your parents won't let you leave the US fearing you from being conscripted into the Taiwanese military. |

HAHAHAHAHA, THIS IS JUST TOO FUNNY. 38-years old? LOL!!! So pathetic. The battle will take place in the strait, not in Beijing, and will end with the PRC flag in Taipei.

am i talking to a bunch of high school kids and junior high school kids?? ha ha ha ha, now that is funny. maybe i need to give you a good spanking instead, so you can run back crying to your mommy.
the battle in the strait of taiwan would be the least of your worries. are you forgetting 9/11. it is so easy to make home make bombs and bomb your people' hall in beijing. when i went through airport security in china, they don't even turn the x ray machine on, they just chat and drink tea. it was quite hilarious. and at the tinnamen square, there were only 3 officers at each corner of the entrance on every 4 blocks. your government facilities are NOT well guarded. |
