What was the very first contact between vietnam and korea? Looking through korean history they have never mentioned any historic relationship between 'nam and korea.

And was there anything particularly important that happened in any contact (besides the vietnam war)?

I think they made contact through China. When both nations sent diplomats to China, they met there. We call Korea, "Đại Hàn." Other than that, the only thing that poped up is prince Ly Long Tuong of the Ly dynastry from Vietnam that sailed to Korea after Ly dynasty fell in 1225.

From what my grandma told me, there were lots of Koreans in Vietnam during the Vietnam war. She said there were many Korean ladies in their traditional costumes walking the street of Saigon. Also, South Korea sent 300,000 men to Vietnam to fight the Vietnam war along side the Americans.

I've never heard of any Korean diplomats traveling to Vietnam though. It doesn't mention anything about that in my history books.

Of course not. Hoi An is just an hour from my house. I was thinking of earlier than that. 17-19th centuries don't count, because during that time, naval expedition is commonly practiced in most countries to trade with other nations.

I was thinking of the time around 10-15th centuries.

Speaking of south korean involvment in the vietnam war, I just remembered that n.korean fighter pilots supported the NVA. Anyone knows more about this?

Anyways, so there wasn't any historical importance between vietnam and korea before the 20th century?

Hmmmm... cool info. YManchun. I didn't know that before.

I don't think that we had any contacts before the 20th century, but one thing for sure, that we did know each others through China.

There was an interesting article i found online that mentioned the contacts between Korea and Vietnam in the past. cant seem to find it anymore though icon_confused.gif. but if i remember, i think it mentioned about a Korean who got captured by Japanese and later met and traveled with a Japanese merchant going to Vietnam (they communicated through writing i think). then from Vietnam he went back to Korea. There was another short story about Koreans getting shipwrecked and picked up by Vietnamese. The Nguyen lords then had them ecorted safely back to Korea. Other than those, the article also mentioned about Prince Ly and his followers emigrating to Korea after the fall of the Ly dynasty.

Anyways, i'm guessing the first contact was probably through diplomatic visits through China. From what I heard, when the Vietnamese and Koreans met in the past, they communicated through writing since we had the same writing system dispite speaking different languages.

Both Koreans and Vietnamese wrote with Hanzi (Hanja in Korean and Chu Nho in Vietnamese) back then.

Hanzi

Literally "Chinese characters", or characters of the Han ethnic group.
