I haven't met that many cantonese to make this judgement of cantonese being darker and shorter, actualluy I've seen plenty of pale-skin canton people.

I do know the crime rate in canton is terribly high. Most of the crimes are committed by non-locals tho. There are a lot discussions on this issue recently on some Chinese forum too.

i don't get this north vs. south, mandarin vs. canto thing. To me chinese are all the same, including taiwanese. Mebbe its cuz both my paternal and maternal families come from shanghai and migrated to taiwan and hong kong. We all the same!

I notice that people (not only Mandarin) sometimes say that Cantonese are darker and shorter than northern Chinese.

Most Cantonese aren't even dark. And is that suppose to be a bad thing? OK, that question doesn't need to be answered. Asian culture view dark skin as unattractive, as if it isn't obvious already.

Most countries oddly seem to have something similar. Greece,Italy,Germany... people from northern areas are more naturally lighter. Southerners more darker. So it isnt only a chinese thing

All the Cantonese/HK people from my university, they never have any relations with vietnamese at all. I'm ashamed to say it but some of them say a lot of $hit about vietnamese people. and so do mainlanders.

And they do associate with mainland people as well but perhaps aren't as close.

I'm totally ignorant about this. I totally don't know anything about this so i'm just asking and I'm not starting a fight or something. Is it true? Cuz my Mandarin friend was trying to tick my cantonese friend by telling him Cantonese people are ugly and dark while mandarin people are light and nice-looking. I wanted to ask them but they won't come up with a serious answer.

I am a Cantonese person and honestly some Mandarin speaking Northerners do have hidden prejudice against Cantonese speakers, but its only mild and comes from ignorance. And I am not dark nor ugly. I go out every day and I am still light skin.

Though I am not against Cantonese, my grandparents always stereotyped them as being rude and rough people who talks loud and normally become cooks or bakery owners

My Shanghainese older friend has major stereotypes against Canto people, he said their kitchen stinks from the stew they make and as a result the girls stinks too, and most are not womanly enough, because they like to yell when they talk.

Of course, I don't agree, but stereotype is stereotype.
