YAMAGATA -- A high school boy who was working part-time for a post office failed to deliver 627 pieces of mail, including 437 New Year cards, Japan Post said.

Officials of the Japan Post Yamagata inspection office plan to report the case to prosecutors.

The 18-year-old boy worked for the Obanazawa post office in Yamagata Prefecture.

His failure to deliver mail came to light after some households contacted Japan Post after not receiving New Year cards they expected to receive on New Year's Day.

"I hid the mail in the snow on an empty lot and inside my home because I felt too tired to deliver it," the boy was quoted as telling Japan Post inspectors.
