No word on fate of other civilians held by insurgents
Monday, April 12, 2004 Posted: 0059 GMT (0859 HKT)

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Seven Chinese men have been kidnapped by gunmen in central Iraq, apparently as they were traveling from the Jordanian border toward Baghdad, China's official state news agency Xinhua reports.

Al Arabiya television has also reported the kidnappings, saying it had received a videotape from hostage-takers with footage of the captives that it planned to air.

The head of a Chinese advance team setting up an embassy in Baghdad, Sun Bijan, told Xinhua that he was holding emergency meetings with officials in the Iraqi interior ministry and working through other channels, trying to obtain information about the hostages and secure their release.

The abduction took place near Fallujah.

It is unclear why the men -- who range in age from 18 to 49 and were all from Fujian province in southern China -- were traveling where they were in Iraq.

Xinhua reported the men might have taken a detour as they were traveling to Baghdad because the normal route from the Jordanian border to the capital has been closed by recent fighting.

The news agency attributed its reports on the kidnappings to Chinese officials in Baghdad and four released hostages who reported seeing the captives.

Wow, I was just about to post this news.

---

China opposed the war. China is helping out with rebuilding Iraq though. They are kidnapping Chinese citizens even though China isn't one of the countries who send troops to occupy their country... madgo.gif

well, I don't see what's the point of this. China did not send troops into Iraq, we even opposed this war. USA isn't going to withdraw their troops just because of Chinese hostages.

Now I'm starting to believe those Iraqis are just seizing every asians they see. Without knowing or do not caring what their ethnicities are.

The truth is those insurgents don't know what the hell they're doing. For all we know they're probably thinking those civilians are japanese or koreans.

Edit-

Pretty logical, yet, if they declared they weren't mistaken, then there will be alot of problems.

well, they might torture the hostages though. Middle Easterners tend to harbor hatred on East Asians.
