The world's oldest ancient civilization was in Iraq (Sumer) from around 3500 BC, followed shortly by India/Pakistan (Indus Valley Civilization) and Egypt from around 3300 BC, and then Iran (Elam) in 2700 BC, and then China (Xia Dynasty) in 2070 BC.
There is some recent evidence that suggests that the Indus Valley Civilzation in India/Pakistan could have been the first, but most still agree that Sumer (in Iraq) was the first civilization. This post has been edited by Jagger: Jan 22 2006, 10:58 PM |

The first "city" was build in Iraq. It all started with agriculture: people hadn't to move anymore looking for food. This happened in the prehistoric age, exactly the neolithic period (around 10000 BC). Many archeological sites in the middle east reveal a presence of the phoenician civilisation at almost the same period. |

Dr. Kramer, an English archaeologist, professor emeritus at the University of Pennsylvania, states in his book "History Began at Sumer", that Sumerians had a legend that Sumers came from the East, and Dr. Kramer also believes this as well. thats cool to know how globalization affected everyone even back then... That's only one of the theories about who the Sumerians were. The other theories suggest they were the ancestors of either: -Modern Iraqis (most common thoery) -Dravidians (South Indians) -Jews -East Africans -Altaic peoples (which you pointed out) QUOTE (soro_i @ Feb 25 2006, 04:15 PM) If I'm not mistaken... A civilization is defined as a Bronze Age urban society that lived in cities, and these didn't appear until 3500 BC. The earliest neolithic settlements were: (not civilizations) 1. The dawn of Sumerian civilization was ~4200 BC... Township began around Eridu probably by ppl from Iranian Plateau... But at that time, there were already other "cities" in Mesopotamia (Uruk)
By ~4000BC, the Egyptians already buiding dam and the Chinese already planning cities in grid pattern. As far as I know, Indus Valley - Harappan (Mohenjo-Daro) was built ~ 2500 BC and China - Shang Dynasty was also around that time period. And Egyptian Early Dynasty started around 2900 BC. |

The first cities are dated no earlier than ~3500 BC, when the Sumerian settlements of Ur, Uruk and Eridu became cities. Also, Eridu is in Iraq, not Iran. As for the Indus civilization, it began in ~3300 BC, peaked from ~2600 BC, collapsed in ~1700 BC, and then the Indian dark ages began (which lasted until ~1000 BC). The first dynasty of Egypt began in ~3200 BC, which then peaked for a continuous 3000+ years. The first dynasty of China (Xia dynasty) began in ~2070 BC, and China later peaked from ~1700 BC (starting with Shang dynasty) for a continuous 3000+ years. This webpage has a brief timeline of the four civilizations of the ancient world: (Mesopotamia, Egypt, Indus, China) http://www.harappa.com/indus2/timeline.html This site has a more detailed timeline of the civilizations: http://timelines.ws/0A1MILL_3300BC.HTML http://timelines.ws/0B3300_1300BC.HTML The dates I've given for the civilizations are similar to the dates in those sites.
