Does anybody know some details of the deal he signed with Temasek Holdings? Does it mean that he has planning to give away strategic military businesses belonging to the Thai nation to the Singapore government? Otherwise, what is the protest in Bangkok about apart from his not paying capital gains tax on this share deal?

How could a filthy rich family get away with not paying tax on a $1.8 billion windfall? That's just crazy, but apparently that's how the Thai stock exchange works.

There has been accusations of corruption and the manner of which Thaksin transferred his stake-ownership to his children, which according to some expects could amount to insider-trading.

In Europe there are EU regulators who monitor all inter and intra-governmental dealings. Had one existed in ASEAN, this deal would certainly have been srutinised cos it comes under their jurisdiction.

Business deals between governments involving issues of national interests are highly sensitive. Malaysia knows this very well, cos it has been dealing with Singapore for a very long time. During the time of Dr Mahathir, Malaysia blocked many attempts from Temasek from getting Malaysian acquisitions, but this has changed recently. Now there is even a joint fund for Temasek and Khazanah (the Malaysian equivalent) to invest in third countries.

I am confused. I know Shin Corporation and Temasek Holdings are companies on the stock exchange, but who are their owners? Is it the government of Thailand and Singapore? How can a government be corporatised and own shares of another government corporation? Does it mean we can own the shares in a country's vital strategic industries through such market acquisitions in the stock exchange?

None of it's legal, they're not paying tax and they're not releasing any details about it to the public because it's a load of crap.... (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/sure.gif)

Shin Corp's shares are owned by Thaksin's and the Damapong family whereas Temasek Holdings' shares are government owned.

I do not know much about Thaksin. But from what I've read, I am not a fan of him. I think he is a pretty stupid PM because of the ways he handled the South Thailand cases and the fact that he should know better than to sell his business to the S'pore government as product offered is no ordinary products and that the buyer and seller are no ordinary individual. It does seem unethical.

I respect Thailand for the press freedom on this issue.

I'm sure everyone here knows about the ordeal behind the selling of Thaksin's shin corp stocks that it's completely legal. Though the action seems to goes against the common sense we all have regarding income tax. The complexity of the way the stock were sold is way too obvious to be discerned. Anyone with half a brain knows that Thaksin avoided paying tax through the loophole in Thailand legal system. Thaksin's lawyer last remark to the press, "I came to talk about the laws not morality," greatly emphasizes this fact. Don't waste your time garantee anything to anyone because it'll do no good except making more angry mobs.
