Woman faces charges for lying over whereabouts of missing elementary school boy

OKAYA, Nagano -- A woman who faces charges for lying to police that she spotted a missing elementary school boy has told investigators that she was lonely and wanted to attract attention from the public, local police said.

"I was lonely. I thought I'd draw attention if I told a lie," she was quoted as telling investigators during questioning.

At around 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 5, the woman whose name was not immediately disclosed, falsely reported to police that she spotted a boy closely resembling a fifth-grader who went missing in Okaya, Nagano Prefecture, two days earlier, local police said.

During questioning, the woman said she had him change his clothes, gave him cup noodles and drove him toward Okaya in a white van.

She admitted that she was telling a lie after investigators grilled her over inconsistencies in her statements. The boy was found dead in the prefecture on Jan. 15. (Mainichi)
