Mother took rap for son's driving

TOYAMA--A woman who tried to save her son from jail has wound up putting them both in custody.

Police on Monday arrested the 46-year-old woman and her eldest son, 21, after finding she had taken responsibility for a 2003 hit-and-run her son had committed.

In the March 31, 2003, accident in Uozu, Toyama Prefecture, the son fled the scene after hitting a minicar from behind, causing an injury to the driver that required a month's treatment.

The next day, the mother "surrendered" to police, claiming she had been the driver. She was fined in a summary judgment.

The son had just graduated from high school and was about to start university.

"I felt pity for my son and thought I should take the blame in his place," the mother was quoted as telling the police. She was a passenger in the car.

The mother was arrested on suspicion of concealing the perpetrator and the eldest son was arrested in connection with the hit-and-run accident, police said.(IHT/Asahi: February 15,2006)
