Jack a sick man: Psychologist mum fears for racist son's safety

THE mother of fugitive Jack van Tongeren has revealed her fears that her son may be hiding in the bush, surviving on skills he learnt as a soldier.

Stella van Tongeren, 78, a university-trained psychologist, said she hadn't seen or heard from her son since he breached bail on February 20, but she feared for his safety because of his fragile mental state.

"The fact that he has now gone into hiding to me speaks of paranoia," she said from her Melbourne home. "It's the not knowing that's so terrible because we know he's a sick man."

At 58, and ravaged by years of imprisonment, he was no longer capable of surviving for long.

"I'm very concerned because he's sick physically and mentally," she said. "I don't know the other fellow. I'm told he's younger. But Peter (Jack) is a prematurely old man. He might be 58 but in appearance and physique he's more like 70."

Mr van Tongeren's disappearance has sparked a nationwide manhunt. The notorious leader of the neo-nazi Australian Nationalist Movement spent 12 years in jail for a campaign of racial attacks against Asian restaurants in the late 1980s. He fled on February 20 while awaiting trial on further charges of conspiring to firebomb four Chinese restaurants across Perth in 2004.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Paul Zanetti, in charge of counter-terrorism and state protection, said police were following a number of leads and were confident of finding Mr van Tongeren, who "could well be holed up with associates in a metropolitan or rural area anywhere in Australia".

He said Mr van Tongeren and his fellow fugitive, Matthew Billing, were facing only the minor charge of breaching parole, and he urged them to give themselves up.

Mrs van Tongeren, who is recovering from cancer surgery, said she had no idea if he was with Mr Billing, but she feared he might try to survive in the bush on his own using his military training. She said her son, who was christened Peter Joseph Lawrence van Tongeren, had been given the name "Jack" by his fellow servicemen while on duty in Vietnam. The fact that he still used that name indicated that he continued to see himself as a soldier – but this time fighting a war against Asian immigration.

She said the last time the family had spoken to her son was about a week before his disappearance, when he was on his way to buy a motorised bicycle.

"He was quite happy and optimistic and then I was told the same day the police checked on his caravan and they came with guns," she said. "So I think that has been the last straw."

She also feared he might have met with foul play. "It would never enter his mind to default on his bail because he's put up $30,000, which is probably all he's got in the world, and I've put up $30,000 as surety," she said. "We stand to lose that. I'm sure he would not be in a thinking state of mind to do that to me."

She said she had watched her son descend into mental illness ever since he returned from the Vietnam War.

"When he came back from Vietnam he was definitely traumatised," she said. "I am a qualified psychologist, so I am aware of the symptoms and I could see that he was suffering from post-traumatic stress.

"I can tell you one incident, in the street when a car backfired he dropped to the ground. It was an instant reaction. You could see he was still in that highly alert state."

The articulate mother of nine said she had hoped the support of his loving family would heal her son over time, but he moved to Perth to be with his Vietnam comrades.

"While he was there he got in with the neo-nazi mob, which is quite alien to us. His father was a Eurasian, so it was out of character for him to associate with them (neo-nazis).

"The fact that he went to the other side of the continent made it so difficult for family influence to filter across."

She said her son's army training and indoctrination to regard Asians as the enemy had later combined with his post-service paranoia to create a toxic state of mind.

"In his traumatised state, that's how he saw all Asians," she said.

"I don't for one minute believe he is anti-Asian. We eat rice every day of the week and half our friends are Asian. But in that environment he went off the rails. And I do believe that the events of the '80s were the action of a man suffering from post-traumatic stress that was untreated."

Mrs van Tongeren said her son's determination to crusade against Asian immigration had ruined his life. It had made him one of the most hated public figures in WA, as the face of the Australian Nationalists Movement.

But Mrs van Tongeren said her son was adamant he was not involved in the 2004 firebombings, and he was confident of winning his upcoming trial in the Supreme Court.

She said that in the past few years he had changed to peaceful means of getting his message across, such as publishing his book, The ANM Story, and campaigning for a Senate seat.

"He still wanted change," she said. "He still wanted the country to be predominantly white, but he was determined to do it through legal means. He was determined not to go back to prison. I know he would not commit a crime again."

Mrs van Tongeren said her family had spent years grieving for the brother and son they knew had been dehumanised through his wartime experiences. The fact that he still wore army uniform in the 1980s showed he was locked in combat mode.

"I remember seeing a photo of his house in Gosnells and it was sandbagged all around the base," she said. "In his mind he was still in Vietnam."

Before he went to Vietnam, he was a practising Roman Catholic who never missed Sunday mass, she said.
