I think that Japanese music has some interesting, even if it adopts a lot from Western tradition.

I came across a Japanese artist not long ago by the name Joe Hisaishi. His compositions sound great, and he's got good reviews. Who knows what else is there.

Your thoughts on Japanese music, traditional as well as modern. Please opinionate.

yah, you mean from the us and uk. where all countries get their influences from, copy from. just because japanese aren't white doesn't mean they're copycats.

it all came from the US, black people founded loads of modern styles.

france, germany took the same amount of style from the US and UK, but I think there are more international fans of jmusic, since the musicscene is different from other, and probably more original. among them are the japanophiles, but also many who appreciate good music and are like 'music is a universal language', 'you don't have to understand it, just feel it'

hmm, japanese music, japanese rockmusic

there are quite some artists and bands that are have their own styles, and just awesome.

I'm sometimes amazed at how wide the range of musicstyles, groups, singers and artists is in Japan.

I'm not surprised at all if you mention an artist like Joe Hisashi, I haven't heard his music. I've heard so many non-japaese and also non-asian people talk about japanese artists and groups who they think are great and unique-sounding, like Yoko Kanno, Hyde, Shiina Ringo, B'z, Dir en Grey, Miyavi, just to name a few.

if they, normal people, not necessarily japanophiles, and often cool people, really think that,
then the japanese musicscene must be something more original or freshsounding than what they were used to.

I like how the japanese musicscene is dynamic, new groups, singers and artists are getting their breaktrough every year, like Remioromen, High and Mighty Color

I'm not very into anime, though they are worth of the time, but I see why fans often look for more japanese music, cause the music that's in anime can be really impressive.

I dl-ed the Gundam Seed album, and loads of nice songs on it.

'Meteor' and 'Invoke' by TMRevolution

'Annani issho da ta noni' or something, by See-Saw

'Pride' by High and Mighty Color

etc.

Gundam Wings had several songs by Two-Mix

'Just Communication' 'Rythm Emotion'

most of the songs were written by the singers themselves. something I appreciate.

Joe Hisaishi does some really nice piano pieces. If you're interested in instrumental music, then I recommend Yuki Kajiura, Nobuo Uematsu, and Aki Kuroda.

Can't remember if I said they're copycats, but I appreciate your advice. They are a different thing, I agree. (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

Most of the traditional Japanese songs are really good. But for modern, so far the only songs that I enjoy is J-Pop. (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)
Cuz all of that J-Rock stuff is basically more of a kind of like, western rock. But I enjoy western rock better than J-Rock.

I guess that could be it also, although j-rock has a lot more screeching and yelling in my ears. (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/icon_confused.gif)

wow, that's so different from my view on j-rock (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/embarassedlaugh.gif) 2 but yeah, I probably listen to different japanese bands and rockartists than you.

Neomelodramatic

with SUBS woooot! I really like this song, great beat. cool lyrics.

Emu ~ for my dear

ok, this does have some screaming in it, but it's highly appropiate and somewhat poetic, not like punk-@$$ screaming. it's a song he dedicated to his diseased friend. very emotional. great bass, drums

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuVj3L2PjJk...rch=gackt%20emu

another song where he screams in it, but again, it's highly appropiate, lyrical, the song is very 'sophisticated'

''This song is very interesting for two main reasons. First, the musical themes of the song bounce back and forth between very soft, light, and innocent, and extremely dark and threatening. The other very interesting thing is that the use of language in this song (anata, watashi, kare, sentences ending in wa) suggest that it's perhaps sung from a woman's point of view. Basically, the song seems to be the story of love and obsession and madness, ending in... well, you can hear it for yourself. [koho koho] The thematic struggle between the two elements is really reflected in the two types of "dreams" referred to at the end... hard to say which is more disturbing. ^_^''

he's a great performer and live-singer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnG_kBRxrqo&search=doomsday

this is the song with english subs, someone thought it fitted with scenes from 'Naruto'. it does. and it's quite touching.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCAFNW2PyGU&search=doomsday

he also writes more upbeat poprocksongs and beautiful ballads

Konayuki

a theme-song from '1 Liter of Tears'

it's a video with scenes of the drama, it's was a really nice drama (IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/bawling.gif)

spoiler-alert

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kz5ZBG1fjd8&search=Konayuki

Rosier

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcqw51t0R04...er%20Luna%20Sea

I love the screaming in it, it sounds great. well, the quality isn't that good. and yeah, it's v-kei band, but they are really talented.

(IMG:http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/style_emoticons/default/icon_confused.gif) damn, I could go on for hours giving links and such and proove how many great japanese rockbands and artists exist. but meh, I'm not very good in picking bands and artists and I'm laaaazy.

oh, and you know, rock is kind of an emo-music thing, screaming is kind of really normal in rockmusic. as long they don't just scream as if it replaces the real music, and the songs have good instrumentals, vocals and lyrics, they're fine.

which I do find a lot with many japanese rockartists like gackt, hyde, etc. and bands, like Remioromen, B'z, L'Arc en Ciel, Glay, etceteraaaaaa.

SNIPPETS OF KONAYUKI.. thanks to oceansportrait www.livejournal.com/oceansportrait

"Powdered snow, if you could even stain hearts white, would it have been possible for us to split our loneliness in half?" "I probably don't know everything about you, but from a hundred million people, I found you."

=====
Translated Konayuki

Lyrics: Ryota Fujimaki Music: REMIOROMEN

Powdered Snow

The season in which the powdered snow dances always passes by
Even if I’m lost in a crowd I can see the same sky
Even though I'm chilled as if I'm being blown by the wind

I don't know anything(1) about you, do I?
And yet, I found you amongst a billion(2) people
There's no (scientific) basis for this, but I believe this with all seriousness

We can't live at the same time without trivial fights
If I can't be honest, then rapture and sorrow are meaningless

Powdered snow, if you paled me white to the heart
Can you share our loneliness?

I pressed my ear against your heart
Going gently, deeply towards where the sound (is coming from)
(That's where) I want to disembark,
There, we'll meet once again

I want us to reach rapport but I was the (only) one who touched its surface
The only thing that was holding us together was my hand squeezing yours that was numb with cold
Powdered snow, in front (of us), eternity, too fragilely, becomes a stain upon rough asphalt

Powdered snow, this heart that has transcended time is faltering
And yet, I want to continue to protect you

Powdered snow, if you paled me white to the heart
You would wrap around our loneliness and send it back into the sky

(1) lit. Everything.
(2) lit. A hundred million. Japanese number splitting are different in that it goes from a thousand (sen) to ten thousand (man) to a hundred million (oku) instead of the thousand, million and billion we're used to. I just made this a billion to parallel what I call a "numberless number" i.e. one of those numbers that doesn't have other number names in it like a hundred, thousand, etc.

Love Phantom
Performed by: B'z
Lyrics by: Inaba Kohshi
Music by: Matsumoto Tak
Translated by: Mina-P (Email: Minako@senshigakuen.com)

Note: If I pointed out every instance of amazing literary technique used in this song, you'd never see anything but notes. Technically speaking, it's probably some of the most skillful lyric writing I've ever seen. Well, that's AP English for you. But seriously, Inaba-san's lyrics are brilliant, making amazing use of internal and external rhyme, alliteration, repetition, and more terms than I can remember. See if you can pick them all out for yourselves!!! (Oh, the fun!)

I love Japanese music! It's the only kind I listen too. I always hated music 'til I heard it. I love hearing Kappei Yamaguchi sing! XD My other favourites are Do As Infinity, Tackey & Tsubasa, M.O.V.E, lots more I can't mention. ^^

Here in America, common knownledge is that Yoko Ono's husband made some good music. However, that is pretty much the extent of it.

What are some Japanese names in music. I would like to check them out.

tssssssssssssk

you're missing out on a lot of good music, and bad music from Japan.

but yeah, what's good and what's bad is all subjective.

Japan's has a wide range of artists, singers, bands, groups, styles, so there will be something you eventually really like/love.

well, you could click on the link in my sig, so you can dl the song Cube. it's a kind of heavy, artistic, powerful song.

these sites are good to find more about jpop

http://www.j-poop.com/

We aspire to be a definitive source on the pop and rock coming out of Japan and in the process provide a sanctuary for the j-pop collectors who don't always feel at home on this worldwide web where most j-pop resources tend to focus on where to illegally download it. We don't talk about that here. We talk about the music, and when it comes to acquiring it, we talk about importing CDs and DVDs. We will provide streaming audio samples of music so you can make a more informed decision on whether it's something worth buying, but you'll find no high-quality direct download files on this site. It's about respect.

This is a site for the fans, by the fans. The content is created and shaped by the entire community. It's structured so that every voice is heard. Most of us have genre preferences, particular artists we follow and some we ignore. That's why we feel it's important that everyone is able to highlight, preview, review and talk about the artists and releases that interest them. Together we can cover all the bases.

Welcome to j-p00p.com, where we really give a $hit about j-pop. Please make yourself at home.
