QUOTE The Navy is being equipped with domestically produced ship-to-ship missiles and torpedoes produced with homegrown technology. New-model weaponry that recently went into service includes the Haesung (Sea Star) anti-ship missile, the portable anti-aircraft missile Singung and the Cheongsangeo (Blue Shark) torpedo. The Agency for Defense Development held a ceremony celebrating the deployment of the new weaponry at the Gumi factory of defense contractor NEX 1 Future, with Defense Minister Yoon Kwang-ung, the National Assembly's Defense Committee chairman Yoo Jay-kun and Navy Chief of Staff Adm. Nam Hae-il in attendance. W100 billion (US$100 million) has been poured into development of the Haesung cruise missile between 1996 and 2003. Its effective radius is around 150 km. Launched off a warship, submarine or aircraft, the weapon can strike any vessel and even land targets within its 400-500 km range. The missile, which has a longer range than the Styx anti-ship missile and is more accurate, flies just above the surface and is thus difficult to intercept. The portable anti-aircraft missile Singung was developed over eight years starting in 1995 with a W70 billion budget. It has a 7 km maximum target range and flies at a maximum altitude of 3.5 km and maximum speed of mach 2. The Singung is designed to automatically explode against a target flying within a radius of 1.5 m, shattering into hundreds of pieces while shooting down a target. It is mainly intended to bring down enemy aircraft and helicopter that infiltrate at low altitude. It boasts more than 90 percent accuracy and comes at a unit price of W180 million. According to the Defense Ministry, the missile is lighter and more accurate than the Stinger missile of the U.S., Russia’s Igla and France’s Mistral. The Blue Shark is a new anti-submarine lightweight torpedo that can be launched both at sea and from the air, the seventh such weapon of this kind in the world. Over the last 10 years, W50 billion went into the project. The torpedo measures 32 cm in diameter, 2.7 m in length and weighs 280 kg. Traveling at a maximum speed of 45 knots (83 km/h), it can penetrate an iron sheet of 1.5 m thickness. (englishnews@chosun.com )

Blue Shark torpedo was developed with European MU-90 Deep Impact as goal model. Electrically driven fish at maximum of 45knot (officially anyway) with counter-rotating screw. It can be dropped with ASW patrol aircraft, surface ships and forms the warhead of the anti-sub missile. Pretty neat stuff.

does it use wire? or is it wireless? Most surface to air like the stinger tend to be heat guided. Anti tank like the tow or hell fire wire guided. 90% is an awsome kill rate. I doubt there are many that can boast such an average. The real test will be in actual combat. The operator crapping his pants tends to reduce the average . hahahaha. This is proof S Korea isn't anywhere near as reliant on the USA as some believe. |

KP-SAM uses dual IR tracking seeker for guidance like the latest Russian MANPAD missiles.

stingers use ir too but it has many methods of attack(not sure if this is classified) so someone else who knows and is a civilian(or a military member who knows its unclassified) should mention something about "the modes" that the stinger can fire using. one of the mode is the reason why the stinger has a slightly lower kill ratio.

No I meant dual IR tracking seeker, meaning the seeker is capable of following two different level of IR emission, making a single heat source emission like flare difficult to fool the missile. I believe the Mistral and latest Igla is capable of this, thus the reason why they are rated higher in hit percentage.

I believe the Mistral and latest Igla is capable of this, thus the reason why they are rated higher in hit percentage. i know what you are talking about. i mean special modes that the stinger has. plus i would say something about our ir and radar technology but i really cant. think of it like this(hope this isnt classified) a rader scans at coordinate 0000, then it scans how many values up(in altitude) then the radar scans 0001, then it scans how many values up(in altitude) we use wierd @ss software to maximize the effectiveness of accuracy. but we use "modes of attack" to maximize the damage. its really commonsense stuff that people just dont seem to realize but its effective. our ir technology is smart enough to calculate the diffrential in real time so it gives us a special edge in attacking really fast moving targets in weird and funny angles(classified). the person with the stinger still has to fly the missle near the target(safegaurd), but the missles has its own guiding capabilities(fire and forget) plus it has IFF (Identification-Friend-or-Foe) technology for use in dark lighted enviroments(i remmber marines trainning with m-16/14, they shot at targets farther then they could see and they couldnt see them in the dark either. sometimes friendly fire does occur) all i have to say is that we use weird technology. if you see our stingers in action you would say "wow, that was wierd" btw does the KP-SAM have the capability of a passive attack weapon? fire and forget? ahh found it fas.org one of our newer weapons. i was talking about the ability to track and attack the tanks from above. cause what do we know about tanks? they have minimal armour on the top(i dont think Nkorea has our level of chevron armour plating yet). QUOTE (from fas.org) It has a top attack dual warhead capability which can defeat all known enemy armor systems. ive seen the javelin in action. you point the thing strait at the object and fire it. keep the crosshairs on the target and it skyrockets way up. after a period of time it comes down with so much force it usually takes out the target. the test i observed was on a stationary target but it should home in on a moving target. other stuff. hmm fake bomb explosions. beating up marines in a riot situation. watching a fake remake of a airial bombing(machine gun fire/bombs simulated by bombs in the ground) the usuall stuff you see in the movies. the only thing they didnt perform was flying like 20 something of some aircraft because there was bad weather that day. the planes where part of the skit. so the bombs just blew up. IR missiles ARE generally fire and forget. If I remember correctly, KP-SAM uses a smaller warhead then most MANPAD missiles out there, but uses directional charge to maximize effect.
