Okinawans are NOT Japanese people. They may have mongoloid features of East Asian people, but a lot of them are hairier than Japanese people.

I'd say they're a mix of people from Polynesia, China and the Mariana Island areas. But most of them came from mainland China according to Chinese poetry and historical sources.

Okinawans are NOT Japanese people. They may have mongoloid features of East Asian people, but a lot of them are hairier than Japanese people.

I'd say they're a mix of people from Polynesia, China and the Mariana Island areas. But most of them came from mainland China according to Chinese poetry and historical sources.

They're Japanese citizens seeing as Okinawa is a prefecture therefore they should call themselves Japanese.

^So is that why the mainland Japanese discriminate against them just because they got more Chinese blood? I know that karate came from this region via Chinese immigrants from Fukien migrating there and teaching locals how to use kungfu since the samurai forbid them to carry swords.

In California, I have met my share of Japanese-Americans who are of Okinawan descent. They tend to have some southern Chinese influences in their face. Like that guy from Star Trek, a lot of Okinawans I met looked kinda like him.

The tie between Ryukyuan languages and the Japanese language seems to suggest that their common origin is in immigrants from eastern China, the founders of Yayoi or Kofun I think.

Anyway I dont think any of my Okinawan side are discriminated against, at least not these days anyway.

Okinawans WERE NOT Japanese origin,Japan's Satsuma samurai clan captured those islands during Ming Dynasty according to one Japanese TV drama aired in the 1990's.

AINU are the hairy NATIVE Japanese not Okinawans as you've mistaken,modern day Japanese are a mix of Koreans/central coastal mainland Chinese/Polynesian/etc.

You should be proud to be okinawan! My Great grandfather and greatgrandmother came from Okinawa to Hawaii in the early 1900s. The Japanese from Mainland Japan always looked down on the Okinawan's because they were farmers, even here in Hawaii. I have 9 nationalities but my last name is Jitchaku. From my research I found that even my last name in Okinawa is no more. Jitchaku is now Serikaku, a Japanese name. What a shame! You should take pride in being from Okinawa! At least I can go to where my family comes from to research family ties because there still is Jitchaku prefecture. We were from what I understand related to Chinen. If you don't take pride in your heritage it will dissapear. From what I understand there is a growing undercurrent of people trying to acknowledge the culture. Similar to the resurgance in the Hawaiian culture during the 1970's of which I'm also proud to come from. Aloha.

I beg to differ. Okinawans have always been known as hairy. I should know. My great grandparents and their community all came from Okinawa and are for a fact hairy.

Okinawans existed in Ryuku, Japanese army entered the islands and took over and became rulers.
Hawaiians existed in Hawaii, American Navy entered the islands and took over and became rulers. Whats the difference?
