I will not believe a site that claims Hoklo/Hakka/Yuet people invent everything This post has been edited by 直隸總督: May 4 2004, 09:12 PM |

QUOTE Huangdi ("The Yellow Emperor") and Chiyou are two figures from tranditional Chinese legend in prehistory. Huangdi is commonly regarded as the representative ancestor of the modern Chinese people, whereas Chiyou is commonly vilified as representative ancestor of barbaric tribes, whom Huangdi's clansmen supposingly have defeated through military ingenuity. Setting the legends aside, in ancient Chinese historic writings, these two groups of people (Huangdi's clan and Chiyou's clan) have come to symbolize more-or-less well-defined ethnicities with coherent cultural features. It is through the written historical essays that modern scholars attempt interprete the actual ethnicities the ancient writings were trying to portray. As it turns out, Chiyou's tribes have been generally identified with the lower-Yellow-River basin civilizations, as examplified by the archeological discoveries at the Dawenkou site in Shangdong province. Whereas Huangdi's tribes have been generally identified as predecessors of the upper-Yellow-River basin civilizations, as examplified by the archeological discoveries of Shang dynasty's Yin Ruins in Anyang site, in Henan province. Furthermore, from the written descriptions of the Chiyou tribes, a few items have helped to identify them as the ancestors of the later Hundred Yuet people. Such as the usage of stone axes and crossbows. Archeological findings of stone axes extend all over coastal China, Southeast Asia and Polynesia, reaching far-away places such as Hawaii and Easter Island (Rapa Nui). Another supporting fact is that the modern Hmong people (many of them became refugees during the Vietnam war, and some have been relocated to Minnesota and Wisconsin, U.S.A.), also known as Miao or Yao by the Chinese, do keep the tradition of venerating Chiyou as their patriarch ancestor. A startling discovery at the Dawenkou site in Shangdong is the pottery inscriptions. These inscriptions have now been identified as hieroglyphic writing, with some characters recognizable to being precursors to modern Chinese characters. Given the close association of the Dawenkou to other aspects of the Yuet civilization, it became problematic for traditionalists to reconcile between the supposingly more civilized Huangdi's clan and the confirmed writing inscriptions of the barbaric Chiyou's clan. The main issue at stake is: if Chiyou's was indeed a foreign barbaric civilization, does it mean that the Chinese did not invent their own writing but had to borrow it from a supposingly lesser civilization? A civilization that the traditionalist have claimed as being destroyed and chased away by the expanding Han culture. Due to the controversial nature of the discovery of Dawenkou inscriptions in the 1960s, it took the Chinese scholars more than 30 years to confirm and accept these inscriptions as actual writings. Clearly, in order to lay claim to Dawenkou's heritage as Chinese, the traditionalists will have to revise and accept Chiyou as another valid ancestor. The problem is: how to reclaim an ancestor that has always been vilified in Chinese history? An ancestor that is only recognized and held respected by the non-Han, barbaric, lesser civilized ethnicities like the Hmong? http://www.hoklo.org/YuetCulture/Articles/?item=5 |

BishoujoHunter, do you know if the Hmong are direct descendents of Chiyou's tribe or are they a mix between another?
Oh and btw could you put your answers in your own words instead of quoting someone else. It's almost seems like you aren't putting forward your own thoughts, but instead someone else's thoughts. This post has been edited by Thanol: May 26 2004, 07:39 PM |

I am thinking that hmongs are the people who venerate chiyou as their ancestor they are also victims of chinese expansion like the the other southeners |
