No More Bubble Gum For Nadya

Even the buzz in the Big Apple isn't quite enough to keep MTV presenter Nadya Hutagalung in the city. The Indonesian-Australian host of the Global Groove show for the past year has turned down an offer to remain with the music channel in New York. Hutagalung, 26, has opted instead to join Singapore TV station MediaWorks. Maternal instinct helped make her decision: After a spate of high-school shootings in the U.S., the protective mom reckoned that her six-year-old son would be a lot safer in Singapore. Besides, she isn't about to limit herself to an audience hooked on bubblegum pop: "How long," she says, "can you keep talking about the Backstreet Boys and the Spice Girls?" At MediaWorks, the former model and club owner joins a team of what creative director d!ck Lee describes as "good-looking people with talent." Her first project: the lead role in an upcoming drama series, Paradise, in which she plays an amateur stuntwoman in search of her long-lost father in the Philippines. Maybe that's what they call having brains as well as brawn.

Nadya Drives Motoriststo Distraction
As if potholes and speed-demons were not enough, Jakarta drivers now face a new road hazard: the come-hither looks of MTV's Nadya Hutagalung. Featured on billboards promoting a brand of soap, the saucy Latin America-produced ads have the one-time commercial model dressed in a negligée gazing seductively at passersby. "These ad placements turned out to have an effect on drivers' concentration because their attention is split between enjoying Nadya and looking ahead," said the car journal Otomotif. One motorist told the magazine: "I was taking a deep breath after looking at Nadya, and suddenly my Honda ran to the right and bumped a Suzuki." Others have apparently come up with similar explanations for bent fenders and damaged bodywork. A police spokesman warned of "serious actions" if any of this could be proven. "I really don't know what the big deal is," half-Indonesian, half-Australian Hutagalung told Asiaweek from Singapore, where she now lives and works. "Drivers should really be paying attention to the road first. And if they really want a good look at me, they can just switch on MTV."

Nadya Hutagalung probably is the most recognizable Indonesian beauty. Yes, she was the MTV Asia VJ from Indonesia. This woman comes from West part of Indonesia from an island called Sumatra. She carries Batak heritage and speaks fluently in both English and Indonesian.

Nadya Hutagalung is one of famous Indonesian celebrities who reach her eminence through out South East Asia and Pacific region when she became MTV Asia VJ. She started her career as a model when she was 11 years old after won a model search in Australia and then she became international model. Her face appeared on many famous magazine covers such as Elle, Vogue, etc. When MTV Asia began to broadcast they found Nadya as the best choice to be one of the first VJs of MTV Asia. Her beautiful face, smart spoken and stunning appearance had brought MTV Asia became popular among youths.

Nadya was then touted as one of the most beautiful women according to For Him Magazine international edition, several Singapore magazines where MTV Asia Head Office located, and of course the local magazines in Indonesia. She was also became a brand image of Coca Cola, Frank & Co. and Lux soap. Nadya also appeared as a VJ for MTV Beach on MTV USA, New York in 2000 and played TV drama in Singapore.
In 1999 and 2000 Nadya won Asian Television Awards for Best Host. Indonesian newspaper Bintang listed her as one of top 10 stars on television, and Singapore’s New Paper touted her as Personality of The Year. Asiaweek Magazine wrote her as one of the Asian Trend Makers.

After leaving MTV Asia in 2001 she joined Singapore TV Station MediaWorks as a TV host and actress. Even though she’s became a part of MediaWorks she still excited to host shows in Indonesia such as ‘A Mild Live on TV-Power by Soundbuzz’ and TV drama and active in WWF organization for save orangutan campaign because she believed that was her way to keep connecting with Indonesia. In 2004 when tsunami hit Asian region Nadya hand in hand with charity organization MILK (Mainly I Love Kids) spearheaded a project called ‘Finding Sunshine’ to raise funds for tsunami victims.

WHEN MTV BECKONED IN 1995, Nadya Hutagalung came running. Music, travel, hey, this was a job that she could have fun doing. And she has. The 23-year-old video jockey has clearly struck a chord with young audiences in the region. Consider the mushrooming number of Webpages devoted to the Indonesian-Australian (just too many for us to count). She was honored at last year's Asian Television Awards, the Indonesian newspaper Bintang listed her as one of the top 10 stars on television, and Singapore's New Paper voted her the show time personality of the year.

What makes her such a hit? Good looks and a spunky personality help. But the MTV presenter, known almost universally by her first name, reckons there's more to it. "I'm real," she says. "I don't just sit and giggle. What you see is me. If I don't feel like talking one day, then I don't. Other days I might feel like being crazy, throwing papers and stuff. So I do it." Perhaps there's an affinity for limelight in her genes. Raised in a theatrical family in Australia, Nadya was already performing in a local theater company as a child. At age 12, she was headed for Japan in pursuit of a modeling career. Her distinctive looks and vibrant personality brought plenty of work with top international publications -- and a confidence in front of cameras that helped plenty in her television career.
It's tempting to dismiss Nadya as a narcissist or an airhead. She's neither. In fact, the ex-model is something of a greenie. References to the dangers of over-fishing and destruction of coral reef pepper her TV patter. There's a degree of self-interest, of course. The star is a keen diver. Recently, she has even begun to lobby government support for protecting Indonesia's marine reserves (a relative is a member of the legislature). Nadya loves surfing too -- on the Web that is. The self-confessed Nethead is often found on chat-lines. And despite her raver's image, Nadya is definitely house proud. She is a single mother with a four-year-old son, and is happiest searching out art works and other unusual items for her new home in Singapore. A pet snake, for example. "Although I have to find out whether it's legal to keep them here," she hastens to add. Film offers have inevitably made their way to her in-tray. For now "MTV is my priority," she says. But she's dreaming of another way to mix work with play: her own dive center.

Art auction to raise funds for tsunami survivors

The Tsunami Disaster that struck South Asia on the 26th of December 2004 claimed over 160,000 lives, and destroyed the homes and livelihoods of millions of people. Finding Sunshine is a project that aims to restore some semblance of hope for a brighter future for one of the most affected and vulnerable groups of victims of this disaster - the children.

With essential infrastructure wiped out, and a lack of basic necessities such as food, clean water, shelter and schools, the long-term welfare of orphaned children requires financial aid not readily available in their home countries. Can art be used as a tool to make sense of this disaster? Can art unite us as fellow human beings in our efforts to provide practical help?

Helmed by media personality Nadya Hutagalung, and in conjunction with charity organisation MILK (Mainly I love Kids), Finding Sunshine will showcase interpretations of this crisis by various artists and photographers.

Nadya will contribute her paintings alongside artists Ann Healey, Paul Tan, Ketna Patel and Henne Mercer, and photographic works by Geoff Ang, Cher Him, Tan Kheng Ju and Wee Khim. Audiences and patrons will have the opportunity to bid generously for the artworks on display as well as give open donations.

A group of artists in Singapore have come together to help children affected by the Boxing Day tsunami "find sunshine". Artists and photographers have contributed some 30 art pieces that would be auctioned off next Thursday.

The Indian Ocean tsunami left some one million children homeless, orphaned and traumatised. To help restore some hope for them, TV personality Nadya Hutagalung decided to spearhead a project called "Finding Sunshine". Rounding up some 12 artist and photographer friends, Nadya got them to paint and take pictures. These works of art will be auctioned off to raise funds.
Nadya herself, who is currently away in Indonesia for the Lunar New Year, painted two art pieces for the auction. Commercial photographer Geoff Ang and British artist Ann Healey were most happy to contribute to the charitable cause.

Ann said: "It's very diffificult thing to do because you want to do something that's really good, you want a piece that would really sell. The pressure is a lot greater when you want to do something for someone else especially when it's for children.

"The main idea of the painting is the delicacy of life, and that we should cherish that. And these tiny flowers, they are not to be seen as that, but as some kind of growth, of the human spirit. I guess the lightness coming out, of finding sunshine." And the theme of hope is central to most of the artworks.

'Finding Sunshine' will hand the money raised to YMCA, which is carrying out emergency relief and long-term restoration work in tsunami-hit areas. The 29 art works will go under the hammer at the Arts House on February 17. The project hopes to raise $50,000 to provide education and art therapy for children affected by the tsunami.

Dude... I was just drawing a comparison on how both posters are morbidly similar. It was not meant to be a competition of which poster is sexier. Since both movies were released in 2002, guess what, chances are AADC copied Talk to Her's poster.

Talk to Her won 31 awards including an Oscar and was nominated 25 times in different categories. As for AADC, 0 win 0 nomination.

I think it's kinda cheap for AADC's production team to do that. I mean I can understand if a movie's plot is being remade but who the heck would rip a movie poster. Even a kindergarten could come up with his or her own poster.

Honest, Openess and talks straightforwardly, that’s the very chunky manner of Nadya. She by no means hestitates to spill out anything she thinks it’s the truth. Even the most hurt truth.

"Oh, I have. When I was a teen all I could do was just crying. But after I grew up, things like broken hearted for example, in real life there must be a reason. It means not mend to be or maybe God is testing us or sort of”

We were in the "Pleasure Dome," a luxury nightspot located in one place with Europe Music Bar. Both places for upper class are situated around Phonix Hotel - Singapore.

The operational manager of "Pleasure Dome" seems familiar with Nadya Hutagalung. It’s not a doubt since the name of Nadya has been well known in Singapore. Her popularity soars after she became a VJ of MTV Asia which head office is based in Singapore. With Bataknese face and mix Indo appearance, appearing through out Asia Pacific, including Indonesia, no wonder Nadya is getting more famous.

Just recently, in Singapore, Nad was just elected as top model with talented personality. “It has trimmed down my privacy,” sighed Nad as if speaking to her self. Her activity as a model has its own class. Besides Lux soap and Indonesian traditional cosmetic, Nad is also staring the advertisement of Frank & Coo, to promote the diamonds and jewelries.

Nevertheless, Nadya still has one side to become her self. For instance, her braveness to appear topless in Singapore magazine, Female, that rocked the public.

"That’s a part of my willingness to express my self truthfully. I wanted to look natural such as those pictures, which able to portray the real me. But it caused chaos. I felt so bad. To me, to pose like that is not a big deal. Because it fits with the storyline and it represents who I am. So the context is very clear. Don’t just notice the nudity but you must see its side of art photography as well. Beautiful, isn’t it?”

Eventhough she’s become famous and made lot of money, Nadya is still a single daughter who’s very close to her family although her father Ricky Hutagalung from Indonesia and her Aussie mother Diane Thompson have divorced. As an independent girl who lives in international city, family relationship has important meaning for her. “It’s like a balance for this life, as a guidance,” she answered wisely.

Since she was a teenage, her family gave Nadya a freedom to pursue her career, as long as it usefull for her future. Including let her go starting career in Tokyo when she was just 12 years old.

"Maybe it sounds fake. But until now I still remember strongly and advise from my uncle, that I must clever to keep my family good name”, said a female born in Tammworth, New South Wales who happened to study in Bandung for 2 years. Though her father lives in Tarutung, Medan and her mother still lives in Sidney, it doesn’t make Nad loose contact with them. They never stop calling and her mother often visits her in Singapore.

"By the way, do you like sensual pose?
"I just like normal and natural poses,” answered her.

Her experience infront of the camera has long enough even it started in a very young age, 12 years old. As the only child in the family who love theather, eversince her childhood Nad has joined a local theater in Australia. A step that has a big role now in developing her career.

"Especially to express my self facing the camera, the experience in theater really helps,” confessed Nad. Some of her appearances in magazines cover, Indonesian or Singapore editions, proved her statement. She can be that witty and relax, freshy and naughty. “Being a model is just the same as acting,” she added.

Nadya also learned classic ballet, tap and jazz dance. Thanks to it, “My self-confidence grew completely hence when I was 12 I have the guts went to Japan to start and develop my career as a model,” said her.
The option to go for Japan, as what her mother suggested, was brilliant. "Compare to other Asian countries, the fashion in Japan is more advance. They’ve proved it through the names like Kenzo, Hanae Mori and Issey Miyake have succeeded in knocking fashion world of Paris,” she added.

Her Asian face profile attracted the photographers and fashion critics. Nadya’s unique face then started to beautify pages of fashion magazines, from the teens to mature women mags."What I like from this job is I could travel around the world. Of course the chance to wear famous designers dress is a plus from this profession,” she continued.

It has been almost 12 years being a model yet Nadya Hutagalung still has professional attitude in working. She always keeps her promise and appointments. If she’s late she always tries every 10-minute to give information where she is or what’s been going on. Another one of her professionalism side is her readiness anytime to get photoshoot or interviewed.

“That means my fingernails should be well care, and so is my skin, hair and I’m not allowed to sleepy. It cost you if you look sleepy in the photo”, she said. As a model, “I must always look fresh. So I have to sleep at minimum 8 hours a day and drink loads of water,” added her. For that reason she disagrees if people think model profession is just a part of life style."That’s dangerous”, she said.

Becoming a model, she stated, is not a career that just falls from the sky. Prior to get a job she should attended lots of auditions and joined a model agency. She mentioned Madonna and Janet Jackson as not to look up to but as to appreciate their professional attitude in career. "And they’re able to separate the profession and private life,” she explained.
And for the sake of her career, in two recent years she’s been joined Elite Model that has international chain.

"Any plans to go international?"
"Only God knows what I need to do and what His best plan for me”, replied Nad quiet religiously.

NADYA & Man’s Love
It is cloudy in Singapore, even smoggy. 3 PM in the afternoon looked like almost 6. The lobby of Phoenix Hotel located in the corner of Orchard Rd is crowded.

“My son is my utmost priority in my life”, Nad’s eyes sparkling when she was talking about her son Tyron. The presents of the boy maturized this woman. Further more back in 1993 through the media she honestly announced her son who then lives with her in Singapore.

It was not just a shocking step but it also carried not a tiny risk considering Nadya is infamous figure and top class model.

"Wasn’t it the same as reveal a flaw?”
"If I didn’t tell about him, I would feel unfair to my son. What’s more he’s growing up. Let the past be buried, and I lift up the bright side for his future”, explained her wisely.

Her frankness in the fact enables her to walk straight without any burden. "I don’t want to be a hipocrite. And I try to always be honest,"she whispered again.

Luckily, Nadya lives in a country that really respects privacy. Her effort to be honest got full support from MTV Asia, a place where she works as a VJ. Now, in a 3 rooms house Nad nurtures her son with a baby sitter.

"I like living in Singapore. I have lots of things to do here,” she exclaimed. Compare to her life when she lived with her mother in Sidney, where she has a boutique and car. “But it wasn’t too busy”.

"Is it hard to be a single parent?"
"Right now it’s impossible for me to think of myself, or just for my own fun. For instance in choosing a partner. There’s no use if he had a storehouse of love for me, but didn’t love my son. It’s useless,”Nad stressed her lines.

"What kind of man do you like?”
"Humoris, communicative, religious and has a career. With a good career, a man can reflect and well manage the life of his family. I put high a man who is very supporting my life, my carrier. It’s also for a balance. He’s got to have a hobby too. So we can spare a time together doing our hobbies,” said Nad seriously.

"We can do anything to the one we love, because love itself comes from the deepest feeling. If there’s a love, there’ll be no more jealousy. Because it’s a sign of trust and maturity, isn’t it?”

"Are you in love?”
"Ah, I have not much free time now. Only to much thinking of business,” she answered.

"If someone in love with you, but he’s also in love again with another, is it mean that he has a mistress?"
"Mmm... I believe that love can be shared. I can share my love too. Just like a land, we can share kavlings..hehehe..”
"Whoa ..."
"Yes. Love for my son, for my grandma, my aunty, my uncle, my parents, my close friends..hehehe,” Nadya laughed amusingly.
"Including love for him?”
"One thing for sure, if I fall in love, I would be just as usual. Nothing flurry as in teen age such as meet up everyday. 2 weeks absence is okay for me.

"Do you like romantic one, like pouring you with gifts and flowers?”
"I’m also a romantic too, but not too much. Frankly speaking, I’m more into friend’s relationship. Friendship is more long lasting, we can be together longer. That from friendship come love seeds, it’s naturally and honest. But who doesn’t like being given flowers?”

Friend obviously has important meaning to Nadya. “Friend is very precious, a place to share the happiness and sadness,"she said.

"What about a man who likes to restrict this and that?”
"What’s the fun of it? Full of restriction, oh no. Again, marriage is not a goal. I became a model for fun and career, not a means to search husband. Besides I haven’t thought about it now,” she lifted her shoulders.
