After old Ho passed away , Vietnam 's fate had been pretty much balanced by the three factions in the Politburo : Pro - Russia , Pro - China & recently Pro - America mainly because
USA & China had been more intertwined in their economic interests nowadays |

Thanks for you response
QUOTE What I say is the simple truth that PRC has shown that it is capable of taking aggressive strategic actions in the last few decades. The Taiwan issue, is an IF situation. Maybe I should have worded my post more carefully for over-sensitive brats like DaSaBi, but what I say is still true. If, and I'll repeat against for those who don't take time to read carefully, IF Taiwan declares itself to be an independent state, PRC will move to take the island back, forcefully if it comes to that. Am I wrong, or am I right? Tell me I'm wrong, since I've so far run into dozens of Chinese who adamently say 'YES'. Of course it's capable. Cultural and economic power are forms of "soft" power, and if anyone knows how to use "soft" power to reach its ends, it's China. However, "soft" power does have its limits. If there is any country in the world that has more cultural and (definitely) economic power than China, it would be the United States. The only reason why the U.S. would stop Taiwan from declaring independence is because such an act would result in war, something that China has repeatedly warned it will do if Taiwan is de jure independent. If, however, the threat of war (the realization of which the U.S. believes will be too costly) is lifted, then the U.S. has no reason not to support Taiwan. The U.S. has always wanted to split China while avoiding war. If China stands idly by as Taiwan declares independence, then the U.S. has the chance to split China permanently once and for all without the spilling of any American blood. That is a win-win scenario for the U.S., not to mention Taiwan is more popular amongst the majority of American people, especially since the U.S. population is shifting towards the political right. A peaceful path to reunification is the most desirable, it nonetheless is unrealistic at the present time. China (or any other country for that matter) was not united through dialogue, it was united by force of arms. Though it is entirely possible that Mainland-Taiwan relations may improve if the DPP is kicked out of power, it is also entirely possible that relations may worsen still if the DPP somehow clings to power. I just want to make one thing clear. China has repeatedly stated that it will not attack Taiwan unprovoked. That means China will only use arms as a last resort. For now, China is using everything in its power to come to a peaceful compromise with Taiwan, and I think that many Chinese agree with China's current efforts. However, we are also supportive of the fact that should Taiwan declare independence, we should not hesitate to stand and fight for our beliefs of a united China. QUOTE The entrance to Korean War wasn't out of brotherhood for North Koreans, was it? It was calculated risk Mao took to create a buffer state against the United States. I'm also firmly entrenched in my belief that Tibet was as much strategic move against the Indians as it was political, but as SantaKlaws have said, I'm not going to pursue this avenue of discussion with nationalistic Chinese. It's tiring and it leads to nothing. Of course it wasn't an altruistic move on China's part. The world was engaged in the cold war, you can't really say American intervention was out of brotherhood for South Korea, can you? Both sides had a geopolitical agenda behind their actions. I firmly believe that Tibet is a part of China, and what the PRC did was no more wrong than then USA re-unifying the CSA. But if you don't want to pursue the argument, then I have nothing more to say. This post has been edited by Chinese DesertFox: Jul 22 2006, 02:24 PM |

While I'll admit US' 'China containment policy' is a big factor, I think you should also see that there are reasons seperate from US strategic moves that drives other nations to feel threatened. Taiwan, Tibet, they are all just examples. What we know is that 1) China is a large military and economic power, and 2) China has shown ability and perhaps willingness to use that power for her own strategic moves.
It's unnatural to hope that China's neighbors would not be compelled to seek alliances to safeguard their positions. In the end, it just comes down to the simple fact that you cannot assume ANYTHING in matters of state-to-state business. In this case, Vietnam and the United States approaching each other is simply another options they are both considering in their agenda. |
