Air Forces in SEA,

Myanmar has MiG-29 Fulcrums
Vietnam has Su-27 & Su-30 Flankers
Malaysia has Su-27 & Su-30 Flankers, F/A-18 Hornets
Thailand has F-16 Falcons and Jas 39 Grippens
Singapore has F-16 Falcons, with orders on F-15 Eagles and F-35 Lightnings

Singapore seems to have the most potent and modern air force, followed by Malaysia and Thailand.

Little info is known of the Philippine, Lao and Cambodian AF, or simply...weak?

Navy earmarks $100m to acquire logistics ship

By Jaime Pilapil

THE Armed Forces is acquiring a $100-million logistics support ship to enable the Navy to better fight security threats and conduct rescues during calamities.

Naval Staff Chief Commo. Vicente Agdamag said the Navy was negotiating with a local partner of an international shipbuilder regarding the specifications.

“Maybe within the year we will have a brand-new ship that will cater to all our needs,” Agdamag told Standard Today.

The vessel, at least 147 meters long, would have a range of 5,000 nautical miles and a displacement of 6,000 tons, travel at a speed of 20 knots, and accommodate 500 passengers, Agdamag said. A flat top would accommodate amphibian vehicles and at least one helicopter.

Lt. Col. Ariel Caculitan, information officer, said Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro had ordered the Navy to speed up its acquisition of the long-range transport ship as part of the Armed Forces modernization program.

The Navy would sign a multi-year contract with National Maritime Lease Corp. to buy the ship, he said.

Bidders from the United Kingdom, the United States and Singapore have already inquired about the specifications.

Among other tasks, he said, the new ship could be used to repatriate Filipino workers who must flee hot spots, as they did in Lebanon.

Also yesterday, a battalion, consisting of about 500 Marines took off yesterday at Manila Bay on board three ships on its way to Basilan to bolster the government’s campaign against the Abu Sayyaf Group.

The send-off was part of the Navy’s 100th anniversary celebration.

“We are sending one battalion of Marines which will replace our current force now stationed on Basilan island,” Agdamag said.

Actually, this is part of the troop rotation which we practice here in the Navy. This new batch had undergone rigid training, and we hope we could reduce significantly the number of Abu Sayyaf still in the area.”

Two ships, BRP 111 and 116, will transport the 500 Marines. The ships are newly refurbished with brand-new engines and equipment.

Caculitan said the new batch of Marines in Basilan belonged to the 3rd Marine Battalion, replacing the 10th Marine Battalion.

“Our Marines will not only be busy going after the bandits but also hold tri-border patrols with soldiers from Malaysia and Indonesia,” Caculitan said.

Meanwhile, a third ship, BRP Lanao del Norte, will also leave Manila Bay. The ship will carry 550 pieces of heavy equipment, for civil military operations.

Navy operations chief Capt. Miguel Jose Rodriguez said the Navy today was made up of 22,000 men and women, but some 1,500 new recruits were needed this year.

Submarines can wait. What Philippines really needs are big logistic transport ships that can ferry men, machines and materials across various islands. It will give a huge boost to Philippine military.

Draft RP-Thai military accord approved soon--AFP chief

By Joel Guinto

First Posted 16:06:00 07/01/2008

MANILA, Philippines -- A draft military agreement between the Philippines and Thailand will be "approved soon," Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief of staff General Alexander Yano assured his Thai counterpart on Tuesday.

Yano met with General Boonsrang Niumpradit, supreme commander of the Royal Thai Armed Forces, in his office in Camp Aguinaldo and said the visit "signifies the strong defense cooperation and security relation" between the two countries.

The Status of Visiting Forces Agreement (SOVFA) will pave the way for military exercises between the Philippines and Thailand, if approved, said AFP spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Ernesto Torres Jr.

"[Yano] said the agreement is expected to be approved soon," Torres said of the two-year-old draft SOVFA.

The Philippines has a military agreement with only one country, the United States, its main military ally. Several joint exercises between are staged in the country every year.

A SOVFA with Australia has been signed by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and then Australian Prime Minister John Howard in May 2007 and is pending the ratification of the Philippine Senate.

The Philippines is also eyeing similar agreements with Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore, defense officials have said.

Two of my favourties fighters are on list beerchug.gif

the Su-27,35 and 37's are my favourite class fighter. It just look so imposing and dangerous, i personaly think that no other fighter can match the sukhoi in a dog fight not even the f-15 or f-22 can match it has superior maneuverability and power but it has outdated technology so the americans fighters can still beat it without even engaging dogfigh. It is who locks on first wins. icon_sad.gif

My other favourite is the f-16 IMO the best fighter ever built because of it flexibility and superb performance as a multi-purpose fighter.

Who locks on first win? What is the radar, anti-radar missile, air 2 air missile range of the American's fight vs Russian?

i think US fighter have more better radar and advanced systems, srry bht i have forgotten what they are, but yea they are way ahead.
So a US fighter can lock on and release their missiles before the russian fighters know they are even there, also the stealth of the latest f-22 will more likely guarantee that would occur so regardless of the superior maneuverability and dogfighting prowess of the sukhoi fighter over it's US counterparts part it becomes virtually useless in long range.

I doubt that the AAM of the U.S fighter can outrange the radar range of the Sukhoi that U.S' fighter can launch the missile first before being picked up by the radar of the Sukhois

If you are talking about Mig31 with its powerful radar, there is a huge debate on military forum that if fighting in its own turf backed by S-400 and a whole bunch of radar network, it can defeat the F-22 raptor

F-22 raptor is not invinsible on the radar

but the soviet jets are never updated since the cold war is over and even if they did update the systems they can only put it on a few number of planes, but if u put it on a 1on1 dog fight close range the f-22 does not stand a chance on the sukhoi fighter.

Meet an interesting man, a gunsmith.

^ Filipino gunsmith Retired Colonel Juanito Bayang holds his 1911 pistol gun while granting an interview in his residence at Pasay City, southern Manila, Philippines on 16 July 2008. As a member of the military, the 70-year-old Bayang was assigned in the Vietnam War for one year as part of the PHIL CAG-V (Philippines Civil Action Group in Vietnam). Once an avid combat shooting hobbyist, Bayang, who retired from the military after 35 years of service, set up his gunsmith shop to service shooters with their gun enhancement and maintenance needs. Bayang says gun enhancements cost between 5,000 pesos (69.1558 euros; 109.993 US Dollars ) to 30,000 pesos (414.835 euros; 659.928 USD) and has been greatly affected by price surges of basic commodities. "People tend to spend hard-earnerd cash on food and family first," he adds.

^ Philippine national police chief, Gen. Avelino Razon, eyes a 22 cal. German Sports Gun GSG-5 during the opening of an annual defense and sporting arms show in a commercial center in Manila on July 17, 2008. The gun show aims to promote local and imported sporting arms and ammunitions and other safety gear.

^ Gun seller Jon Miranda shows German made automatic firearms being sold during a Defense and Sporting Arms Show in Manila suburbs, Philippines on 17 July 2008.

Philippines, U.S. hold 10-day war game class session

12:35, July 24, 2008

The elite navy troops of the Philippines and the United States are conducting a 10-day classroom-based war game in the southern Philippine city of Zamboanga, local news network ABS-CBN News reported Thursday.

The deputy commander of the U.S. 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force and tactical exercises control group, Fred Grant told the news network that the exercise will be handled by around 20 instructors from the U.S. Marines.

Grant said the training would enhance the capability of the Philippine Marines in tactical warfare and it would also help develop camaraderie among Filipino and American soldiers.

Washington and Manila hold various military drills every year, including the annual large-scale Balikatan military exercise which involves 8,000 Filipino and American soldiers this year.

The U.S. government said it will help the Armed Forces of the Philippines with training, particularly in learning new tactics in military operations, and cooperation in humanitarian missions.
