So what type of resume formats look good? I can't decide on a good header, and am looking for something unique yet professional. I'll probably end up looking something like these, but I think they're rather drab and boring:

I agree..the second one is a more attractive format. I guess I can give you some decent advice, working in a career services office and all...hehe
First off...depending on your career goals, you want to keep the resume conservative. Just bc you may think the header looks boring or drab, doesn't mean you should put any fu-fu's in it. Leave out the fluff and stick to the basics. Times New Roman font style. You see how each of these resumes have the Profile or Summary of Qualifications section? Well most resumes surprisingly dont, and it makes all the difference. It should be 4-6 sentences...short and sweet...to the point and again focused on your educational and academic background. Next..again..I wish I knew what field you were in, but a Technical Skills summary is good to have if it's anything technical (IT, etc) Then it's the experience section. I'd leave out those periods from the second example you have up there. use the tab key to space it all out and keep it consistent from each position. Education rounds it out..and then of course if you're a member of any clubs/organizations, etc. If you want me to look it over, feel free to email it to me at deekang2000@yahoo.com |

The summary form for the profile section is fine.
As for how to order the resume...again..it depends. If you're looking for an internship in your field, put the education first. That goes also for when you really dont have a whole lot of experience (or any) in the field. But typically you want want the recruiter's first impression to be "oh, this person is right out of college..." because they'll almost always go for the candidate that seems to have slightly more experience. Ultimately make an educated choice based on the job description too. Read what the company is really looking for..does it just mention you need a degree in the field and stresses the skills and experience more...or the other way around? You should have a different resume targeting jobs when you apply. Biggest mistake people make is not targeting the job. Another tip that goes with that thought: If the job description is something like: "seeking ambitious, motivated and tech-savy person..." those key words should appear somewhere in your cover lettter (which most companies do ask for). Also, here's an example of that summary without the bulletins: Twelve years' management experience in human resources dealing with fast-paced, rapidly expanding companies. Expertise includes employment law, recruiting, employee and labor relations and compensation. Analytical decision maker with excellent problem-solving skills. Recognized for ability to develop employees' professional growth and increase their productivity. Hope this helped some. |
