Former First Lady Victoria Quirino Delgado passes away

By E. T. SUAREZ

The remains of former First Lady Victoria Syquia Quirino Delgado, who passed away last Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2006, in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, will be interred today at Manila Memorial Park in Sucat, Parañaque after a requiem mass at 9 a.m. at Santuario de San Antonio, Forbes Park, Makati City.

She was in Amsterdam to attend the baptism of her great-granddaughter and had been touring Europe when she was stricken by pneumonia resulting in her untimely demise.

Called the "Teenage First Lady," she was only 17 when she assumed the role when her father, Elpidio Quirino, became President. Her mother, the former Alicia Syquia, died with three of five children during the Liberation of Manila in 1945. Another surviving child was a boy named Louie.

The title, "Teenage First Lady," was given to her by Spanish journalist, now Instituto Cervantes Director Jose Rodriguez, in his 2004 book, "Philippine First Ladies: Portraits."

Despite her young age, she easily adjusted to her role, radiating grace as she welcomed dignitaries to Malacañang and when she accompanied her father on foreign trips.

At 19, she married Luis Gonzalez of Pangasinan and they had three daughters, Maria Victoria, Maria Rosario, and Maria Luisa, and a son, Louie.

In 1984, her husband, pilot during the Korean war and former Philippine ambassador to Spain died of cancer.

A few years later, the former First Lady married Francisco "Paco" Delgado, a shipping and real estate executive and a former ambassador to the Vatican.

Victoria Syquia Quirino-Delgado will be accompanied to her final resting place at Manila Memorial Park in Parañaque by immediate members of her family led by her husband, Don Francisco C. Delgado, other relatives, friends and loved ones.

Her immediate relatives include her children Marivic and Allen, Ruby and Karl, Marissa and Leo, and Louie Gonzalez along with step children Ma. Isabel, Ricardo, Josemari and Susie, Franco and Ros Ros, Federico, and Ana Maria and granchildren Victoria and Gonzalo, Maria, Lucia and Marcos, Marco and Giselle, Isabella, and Audrey, and her great granchildren Bruno, Victoria, Lucas and Sofia.
