LMAO i remember that episode ... though this might not be the simpson, it's the same producer but in Futurama president nixon said something about going cambodian on bender .. lol ... since the program is a comedy, i'll take it as 'it was only a joke'
japhnom
yeah i also remember an episode of the simpsons contained a gag in which homer tries to flush an academy award with the engraving Haing Ngor. But this was later changed to Don Ameche after Ngor recent death.

Welcome to fame and misfortune of being Cambodian/Khmer. You can love it or hate it but you cannot escape it. Just learn how to live with it.

I have many Laos friends in Fresno, and I don't see them behaving like that. Khan is an odd name for Lao prson. I have never heard of such name before, is it Lao or not.

youre right, the Laotian family portrayed on that show is not how real Laotians act embarassedlaugh.gif Khan and Minh(weird name for a Lao) are sometimes assholes on that show. embarassedlaugh.gif

Khan is most likely played off another popular Lao named Kham which could also mean gold in Lao.

i think the producer of the show once had Lao neighbors and had an inspiration. but many things on that show is inaccurate and a misrepresentation of Lao people.

- Khan's voice is similar to a viet or chinese fob rather than a Lao fob.

- The episode when Bobby picked the cane and was revered to be the next Dhali LLama. Obviously that has nothing to do with Theravada Buddhism. It was a portrayal of Tibetan Buddhism.

- The "Lao" that they spoke on the show is a much of made up crap. Even the Pimai episode. I didnt get what Pimai was until i thought about it..."ohhh bpee maii...lao new year" embarassedlaugh.gif

- Chang Wasahnasong, Bobby's bully at school, has a Lao last name but Chinese first name.

Dude,
Don't take those kind of portrayal too seriousely. It will make you age too fast. Those show biz people make things up as they go and ignorant people picked up from that and thought of it as truth. I watch that show and questioned its authenticity about how they portray laos. To counter that kind of stereotype is to make your own show when you and your friends have the know how.
Spike Lee made a lot of difference about how people viewed African-Americans and the perceptions changed now.

"Khan" is pronounced like "Khun" (a traditional jar where people put flower or alms) and is a very popular name in Laos, lke Khun Khum, Khun Keo, etc.

As for Khun voice that is similar to a viet or chinese voice, it's not surprising. For american audiance, all asians speak with a chinese voice.

Grace's husband was working as part of the 'Doctor on Border' organization. I think he ended up with a Cambodian girl. Grace came back because she had nothing to do in Cambodia. She eluted that she couldn't stand watching 'Cambodian Idol' everyday! LOL.... embarassedlaugh.gif

Late night show, like Jay Leno used to mention Cambodia many times. Jay Leno used to make fun of Hun Sen...well he just mentioned the prime minisiter of Cambodia. Some of them were kindda funny...especially when it pokes fun of Hun Sen!! embarassedlaugh.gif

Hey I saw that too. I think he was saying it in a 'I'm going to beat you up' like way.

Not a tv show but a video game. In the first Tekken game Angkor Wat is a stage you can play on.

IPB Image
kown_chma
Is it just a stage or there's a character representing Cambodia. I always thought that guy with the tiger head is some sort of a Cambodian martial art.
starangels81
what about that movie.. The Girl Next Door where there's a cambodian exchange student...

there's also another video game that was taken place at bayon.. where he walk around shooting with his machine gun.. for what the game is call
Goombaking209
