On my senior year in hischool my japanese clas took a trip to Tokyo. i was going, but i didn't wanted to use all my saved money on it. so in the future, i wanted to do it in the future. they had such a blast, it wasn't even describable, they said it was so cool and awesome. i want to go their someday but is it really that expensive over there in T-town.

Watch out for highschool girls that starts to follow you and askes for money :P , not that it would happen, just be carefull just incase, saw an documentary that made me lose respect for japanese girls. not all of them , just most of them.
WakAbOshI
eh, that's cause Japan knows how cool they are so they take advantage of tourists and foreigners jus for ha-ha's. i would =\

i have the same problem. i want to go to Japan, but have no money. it really depends on how much you want to go to Japan. with limited money, you go maybe try for scholarships to study there and in the process go sight seeing etc. or maybe even try and get a job there (maybe the JET program?). but if you solely want to go there just for a holiday type thing... then i suggest that you just try saving, it is pretty expensive (well i think it is... :S)

someday i'll get enough money, i just thought that the city was so awesome, and the country too. it feels so tech advance while really traditional at the same time. i am just scared of being lost cuz the city is hhugge. i might ride the subs and get dropped off like miles away. i heard you could buy anything, and go to clubs without id, but by the time i get there, i wouldn't need to worry about that i guess.

How much is it to go round trip in the Shinkansen. and in the subs too.
AtlantisStar
I'm not sure. I always left the money part to my friends. But anyway. I know you can get a card with Shinkansen credits.

Shinkansens are known to be ferociously on time. They'll be at the stations within a few seconds of their times. So don't expect them to be a few minutes late. Make sure your watch is on time to the exact second!
flipcombatmedic
yeah, i heard a pilot killed himself cuz he was late by few seconds a few times.

Everything is really expensive in Japan (and to think that we're in a deflation!).

Food is very expensive. Be ready to spend at least $US50 per dinner and at most $US300 to $US400.

Japan has the most luxurious hotels in the world. It has several hotels on the best 10 hotels in the world list. There are NO motels. Hotels are VERY EXPENSIVE.

Public transportation is easy to use. Signs are all posted in Japanese, English, Korean, and Chinese. Train prices range from 130yen to 1500yen depending on your distance. If you want shinkansen prices are much higher and it also depends on whether you sit in Green train (reserved seating) or not.

Smoking is not allowed in many public places now (such as on streets or on train platforms).

Japanese people are pretty strict on time.

Better bring an English-Japanese dictionary because Japanese people have atrocious English.

Shibuya is the place where Americans usually think of when they think Japan. It is the place where many Holleywood movies show when they show Japan. (The three big television screens and the Scramble Kousaten where millions cross the street at the same time).

Akihabara is the home of Akihabara Electric Town. Many many electronics stores.

Shinjuku houses the Tokyo Prefectural government and many department stores.

Harajuku is the teenage hotspot. Clothes stores line Omotesandou. Also home of the Meiji Shrine.

Asakusa is home of Kaminari-Mon and has boat taxi to Odaiba, one of the greatest tourists attractions of Tokyo. Home of the Rainbow Bridge and many other attractions.

Shiodome is near Odaiba on the same Yurikamome line.

Ichigaya is the location of Yasukuni shrine. There is a museum there for foreign tourists.

THere are many more places. Just look them up on your own and you'll find tons.

I dunno, some hotels in Paris are very nice.

i am not too worried about the language barrier i took four and a half years of japanese, i use to talk to my japanese customers and stuff, but teh problem is i am use to using the "poliite" form that they taught in hischool. it's the one with the masu ma$hita on all the verbs and stuff. i know a japanese exchange student that i use to hlep out in our class had that automated dictionary. how expensive is that.

Why worry about go to japan when you are so set about it. just take a Loan from a bank or something that don't have any securety, (there are lots of them) or even better just take loans by all of these kind of banks, when you got a half million take a trip to japan, buy a apartment. Search for a job, change your id. Don't think it is that hard :P

$50USD a meal??? what did you eat?? i only spend about $12USD each meal when i was there last year. i went cheap. biggrin.gif

oh and you forgot to mention that the hotel rooms are also very small. the one that i was staying - i think it was Shinagawa Prince (can't remember the name correctly) - they charged by per head instead of per room. transport is not too bad, just don't take their cabs cos it'll cost you a bomb, as compared to Singapore's cab prices of course.
flipcombatmedic
the city is really big as heck, are most tokyo-ites know like most of the city or what.
barkerintokyo
Well, all hotels usually charge by head.....

Famous Japanese hotels include: Teikoku Hotel (Imperial Hotel) and Hotel Okura

You probably can eat US$12 meals but if you're on vacation you might as well eat something besides fast food. In Japan, you should be able to eat something different every day for every meal and they would all be Japanese meals.

Cabs are for rich folk, but if you're on vacation, maybe you might use it. Trains are good mode for transportation and so are buses. Transportation system is the most efficient in the world and not to mention the cleanest.

Don't need to worry about crime in Japan too much. One of the lowest crime rates in the world. Just avoid places like Shinjuku's kabukicho. It is the center for organized crime, Chinese illegal immigrants, prostitution, drugs, and many other horrendous crime. No sane person actually goes there.

You might want to check out Yokohama. They have the famous Ramen Hakubutukan (museum) and many other sites.

Roppongi has the new Roppongi Hills, a great tourist attraction.

Besides Tokyo, there are many other Japanese prefectures you might want to visit. It's not too hard to go to other places of Japan if you take a domestic flight or a shinkansen.
HikaruVenus
^i spent $12 not on fast food, alright. i wouldn't travel all the way there to have macdonalds. i had ramen and curry rice etc. not exactly sumptous but decent j@p food. shrug.gif

anyway i love the cream puff in Japan. can't remember what it's called. it was yummy.
barkerintokyo
you're thinking about shuu kuri-mu.

Curry and ramen is considered fast food in Japan. McDonalds is not the only fast food.
HikaruVenus
what are the slow food then? biggrin.gif
flipcombatmedic
how about outside tokyo, i want to go to like hokkaido want to see those japanese monkeys in the warm springs, and also go to different country and urban towns/cities in honshu or shikoku, how much would a country bed and breakfast be like for a road trip.
