What is the meaning of Hmong? The definition?

The word "Hmong" means "Man"

It means "free". So, if you're free, you're HMONG! Everybody's HMONG!

JK, maybe Hmong has no real meaning. Just a name for a group of peoples like the names for many other nations. But there are scholars that examined it and Hmong history etc and have determined it means "free" or "free people" etc. (i.e. Dr. Yang Dao)

The word Hmong does not means “Free” or “Free people”. It was make-up by Dr. Yang Dao when a Newspaper reporter interviews him and asked him what does the word Hmong means? He told the reporter that the word Hmong means “Free People”. Don’t believe everything that most of our scholars tell you. I’m pretty sure if you ask the elders who knows about their history and background; they probably gave you a different meaning of the word Hmong. For example when a girl ask by other like Do you have a man (boyfriends) translate exactly into the Hmong language. Do you have a Hmong.

I don't believe Hmong means Free...I'm just saying you know how them scholars are always trying to analyze and study things...and that's what Dr. Yang came up with.

Just like how I don't believe Hmong were originally caucasian.

one thing i'm pretty sure is that dr. yang dao did not make up the definition. it's probably whoever that gave us that name that made up that definition. what does it matter, to hmong people it means "free" or whatever.

No, one can not identifies it to be 'Free' just because one says so. There have been studies/informations that says that Hmong doesn't mean 'Free'.
