Full Version: Former Korean prime minister wants to connect Korea with Japan

Former Korean Prime Minister Goh Kun is considering making the construction of an undersea tunnel linking South Korea and Japan as a key campaign pledge for the Dec. 19 presidential election. What are the pros and cons for this? Is this really beneficial for Japan? Or is it just beneficial for Korea?

Who cares. I doubt he'll become a president. I've seen some reports, and they were quite negative, from a Korean POV that is. We need a rail connection to Russia first, then we can start talking about links to Japan.

I remember reading an article like this around 2 to 3 years ago.
Same idea... underground tunnel.
Sounds cool but scary.
Don't they already have one in Europe?

Yeah they have one linking England and France.

This isn't a new idea.
People on both sides have been making plans for this lost cause for decades.
It won't happen anytime soon.

Too costly, high loss of life, unfeasible.
It'll take decades if not more just to make the construction costs back.
In the end it will mostly be beneficial to Japan anyways.

o_0 ... hmm he's a retard...... it will be spoilt if an earthquake happens...

Japan can invade Korea much easier with such a tunnel! Great idea Go Gun!

A single 200+ km tunnel with one entrance and one exit doesn't help an invasion for anyone.

Is this tunnel for trains only? Or is this tunnel going to be constructed for cars and trucks too?

I don't think this undersea tunnel plan will fly.

I also don't think Goh Kun is a good presidential candidate. He won't win, trust me. It's either Yi Myung-Bahk or Pak Gun-Hye who gets my vote.

I would rather have S Korea's gov focus her attention on buildling a transcontinental rail to Russia and China.

Those are the two big giants who will help Korea financially with their resources. Then it's Japan.

Tunnel between Korea and Japan is a threat to Korean merchant industry, and isn't likely to be realized until there is a major shift in that area.

True. maybe this time they could trick Koreans and fill them up in the tunnel and then just blow it up and massacre them that way...

Is it going to be train? Bullet train? How fast do you think it would take from Korea to Japan on bullet train?

A planned massacre? Even more unlikely than the construction of this tunnel.
I dont see why any country would want to destroy a tunnel they spent so much money and time on.
The tunnel is projected to cost over $200 billion US dollars and many, many lives if it were to be built, not exactly pocket change.

The tunnel would have some sort of high speed rail and a road for cars.
Bullet train from greater Busan to greater Fukuoka would approximately take two hours.

Again, I'd say NO to this Japanese proposal if I were a S Korean gov official.

The main reason why Japan wants to connect to Korea is to be a part of the trans-Russian railroad line that will start from Pusan and run through either China or Russia, and all the way, *gasp* to Europe.

Pusan is a major port city of S Korea (for those of you who aren't familiar with Korea).

All the ships coming to S Korea from N America, S America, Australia, etc..will drop their products off at Pusan. The products or whatever, will be loaded onto trains, and shipped to other parts of S Korea, to China, to Russia, and all the way to Europe if needed.

This is a much efficient way for products coming from Australia, the Philippines, etc. to get to Europe. Why? Think about it. If a ship were to travel from Australia to Europe, that would take a long time, and would cost a lot of money to do so.

So getting back to this topic, Japan wants to get "involved" in this shipping deal by connecting Japan to Pusan. By doing this, Japan can ship her products at a lower product to Europe, and other parts of the Asian continent.

I understand that Korea's in need of a huge government-funded construction project to uplift the economy, but why are these politicians coming up with the crappiest ideas? Roh with his "new capital", Go Kun with his "Korea-Japan tunnel" and Lee Myung-bak with his "inter-Korea canal". Can't we just spend all that money to things much more practical, like nuclear/hydro powerplants, more mass transit and high-speed rails, more highways, etc.
