I'm pretty sure each of us fellow Koreans have an interesting family history. Your grandparents have experienced the division of the Koreas and Japanese occupation right? Tell us your stories! beerchug.gif

Here's mine.

Well.... My grandparent's family was all made up of boys. I think there was one woman living with them. My dad tells me the SUNWOO's are supposed to be really smart and we have a reputation. My family comes from the Northern part of Korea which is known as North Korea today but during that whole mess, my Grandfather and Grandmother both escaped the North just in time into the South. That is when my father was born severl years later. Even though my Grandfather had managed to escape the North, his brother was stuck in the North. I forgot how the story went but... I think my grandfather and his brother were either reunited or my grandfather had found out that he had died. I totally forgot. Anyways!!! When my grandfather was still a teen, he living under Japan's control so everybody at that time was forced to learn the Japanese language and speak only Japanese and not a word of Korean. I remember my grandpa telling me that one time he spoke Korean and he got a beating from Japanese police. So anyways.... fast foward to many many many years later. My grandpa was a really successful business man in Korea. He had his own company and he made bullets for Korea. My grandfather was also one of the only people to be driving nice cars in Korea at the time. This was when cars were just being brought the Korea. Not many people had cars to drive but my grandfather was the only one. Later on... My grandfather and his friend (who currently lives in NY), were the only two Koreans in Korea at the time who rode Motorcycles.... Honda motorcycles at that. There's more to it but i'm too lazy to write out all of my grandfather's history. ANYWAYS!!! let's fast foward to years later again.... We came to America... The end.

oh yeah... My grandpa spoke fluent Korean and Japanese. He knew like 60% of Chinese. My grandpa tried to teach me Japanese but It just didn't work out since I was too busy with my Pokemon and whatnot... But now that he isn't living anymore... I sort of regret not learning Japanese from him... blah....

Yeah. Even if nothing would have come from it. It would have been good to try. No I am not just saying that to get more japanese speakers out there. You would have spent more time with your grandfather. It is unfortunate that people were forced and threatened to learn a language and culture.

I spent basically everyday with him. He cut out Korean to Japanese translations out of the Korean newspaper every morning for me. Sure I read them but I never took the time to memorize them. I think I still have some of his Japanese writings in my house somewhere.... I'll scan them when I do find them

My old man moved to Argentina when he was in his early 20s to set-up some kind of garment/clothing racket going over there, got married to a local, flew back to Korea, my mom squeezed me out, they got divorced soon afterwards, and the rest is pretty much history. :genius:

Both my parents were born in South Korea, I was born in gang nam of Seoul, South Korea and lived there until I was about 7. Then I moved to California where I lived for about 6 years. I then spent a year at Korea and came back just last year. That's about it! icon_smile.gif

my parents chose not to have a cultural history they chose to label themselves as blac* I on the other hand will look mabye 400 years into the past to find a spark of culture but so far I could only find about 150 years of deatiled history and thats why I dont know what sub groups I belong to. example: french, dutch, chinese, japanese.

Well, my dad says our clan is related to both former pres. Kim Young Sam and CIA director Kim Jae Kyu- the dude who killed pres. Park Chung Hee.

Anyways- my dad was born in Kyoto, Japan before WW2. Of course he's fluent in Japanese but sadly never taught it to me.
My mom- I think she was born in Masan, but she might actually be of North Korean extraction. Not really sure.
