The movie Freedom Writers takes place in Long Beach CA, at Wilson High School.

1990-1996 was the hayday of the race war between Asians(mainly Cambodians and Laotians) and Mexicans in Long Beach, Wilson High school and its surrounding areas, were the scene of multiple riots and incidents between Asians and Mexicans. For those who dont know, tensions got so bad there, that they brought in shot callers from Asian and Mexican gangs into the gym to try and quell the violence between us, but that did not work.

The movie was originally inspired by REAL INCIDENTS of stories from Asian students regarding the Asian/Mexican conflict.

Exploit our experiences and bloodshed, yet dont make the main plot about us.

Great plot, bring in a white teacher into a classroom of rival fighting minorities, and she saves the day. The great white hope. *shrugs*

The movie was originally about the Asian/Mexican conflict, but was switched to Black/Mexican conflict theme, as this conflict is more widespread.

Ya alot of blacks I know are really getting pissed off at the constant "White knights" in these movies who have to come save the poor minorities from their own ignorance.

If the inspiration for this movie was a conflict between Asians and Mexicans, how come Hilary Swank "saves" black kids and not Asians OR Mexicans?

I think there were actually a decent amount of Latino, Asians, and even a white kid who were the main characters of the movie too
