(Kyodo) _ Mongolian President Nambaryn Enkhbayar told Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Wednesday that Mongolia will withdraw its bid for a nonpermanent seat on the U.N. Security Council in 2009 to let Japan run for the post, Tokyo's top government spokesman said.

Abe, who spoke with Enkhbayar on the phone in the morning, expressed his appreciation of Mongolia's goodwill and promised that Japan will contribute to the international community by winning a spot on the council again as soon as possible, according to Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuhisa Shiozaki.

Japan held a two-year rotating nonpermanent seat through the end of last year and is also seeking a permanent seat on the council.

In the telephone conversation, the two leaders also agreed to continue to develop bilateral relations as well as work on realizing U.N. reforms soon, Shiozaki told a press conference.

The Mongolian president is scheduled to visit Japan at the end of February.
