Thailand says relations with Malaysia on the mend

By Manager Online 30 January 2007 18:12

January 30, 2007
BANGKOK (AFP) - Malaysia's prime minister will visit Bangkok next month, Thailand said Tuesday, as bilateral relations steadily improve after years of strain over separatist violence along their shared border.
Premier Abdullah Ahmad Badawi will travel to the Thai capital on February 11 and 12, the foreign ministry announced.

"Prior to this government, relations between our two countries were not as satisfactory as we would like to see," Foreign Minister Nitya Pibulsonggram told a group of foreign reporters Monday.

"I believe we are on our way to making amends."

Relations between the neighbours have been strained by three years of separatist violence in Thailand's Muslim-majority south, where a majority of the population is ethnic Malay.

Ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was toppled by the military in September, had periodically accused Malaysia of harbouring insurgents and of failing to cooperate in the battle against the militants.

Nitya said that army-installed Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont was committed to resolving the unrest through peaceful means, despite a surge in violence in the four months since the coup.

He said the unrest, which has left more than 1,800 dead, was harder to stop because of the number of splinter militant groups operating in the area.

"There is no longer a monolothic powerhouse and chain of command," Nitya said.

The Thai foreign minister also defended Thailand's harsh reaction to an unofficial meeting between Thaksin and Singapore Deputy Prime Minister S.
Jayakumar during a recent visit to the city-state by the deposed premier.

"It's a breach of understanding among friends," he said.

"It isn't our intention to start a rift that cannot be healed between our countries."

Thailand cancelled a series of diplomatic meetings and launched an investigation into alleged eavesdropping by a Singapore-owned telecom -- actions which Nitya said were justified.

"That was perfectly called for," he said.

"If I were to invite a person that is essentially in total opposition to what they're trying to do... I don't think that they would understand. I don't think they would look at it any differently," he said.

Now Thai PM said to every country that if you invited Thaksin to your country it mean you are on Thaksin side. So they have to chose btween Thailand or Thaksin. But perhaps Spore w Thaksin cuz the hope on push Temasek share up. embarassedlaugh.gif

This goverment still fail to covince on the reason why they have to coup and how Thaksin is corupt. And what Thailand situation on the last September.

And bfore they annouce the western media assume that they are bad. And many of the western goverment was benefit by Thaksin project are not happy and talk crap about this goverment

EG
USA lost FTA

Spore lost Temasek money

^ what you say is true but i don't think that making other nations effectively takes sides is necessarily the right course of action given that the current administration already has a negative image (coup d'etat, military etc). given that the current government is badly viewed by the US and EU at least (and face it - they do hold alot of financial and political weight), i suspect that making countries take a side is just essentially providing fuel for those who support square-face. saying that inviting thaksin shows you are on his side is - like i've said - the kind of idiocy i expect from a bunch of schoolchildren (oh-you're-talking-to-him-so-you're-not-my-friend-anymore), not from the leaders of a country. they have a bad enough image, why are they making it worse for themselves - woudn't it be easier to play the publicity cards and provide a clean image so people don't invite thaksin in the first place?

IMO....thailand should forward thinking....lets not go thru whatever in the past...move on...mend the internal problem....mend the ties....get the support from other nations...rebuild themselves so that investors flock back to the country

or else, thailand going to provoke another crisis....remember 1997

Is it true most governments don't view the current thai government as legitimate? I think the new Thai government is witch hunting because it is still insecure in its hold on power.

The Honorable Ralph Boyce, United States Ambassador to the Kingdom of Thailand

If this government has thai people 's support, it is legitimate.

For forieners who live outside thailand, they can say anything about thailand, but it is thai people who will face the consequence of the actions of this junta-installed government.

and thats what im scared of since i have alot of loved ones living there. just because the PRC and Japan view it as legitimate doesn't necessarily mean that western powers will - and yes, their opinions matter. you can't expect thailand to just rely on japan and the PRC.

And who are those western powers?
Investors?
Foreign investors only looking for countries with good ROI.
If these old people can give the greedy investors what they want , they will shut up.
Dubya? Blair?
They don't want to push thailand too hard. Because China is waiting with the open arms.
Prime Minister of NZ was the only leader of this region (Asia-Pacific) that condemn the coup.
Others only expressed their disappointment.

If the junta keep their promise(election by the end of this year), everyone will be happy.

They both have problems with their consituencies. But irrespective of who leads the country, may the ties between Malaysia and Thailand continue to strengthen. And with Singapore too.
