Swiss company mulls $2.6 bln project in Vietnam island


Switzerland’s Trustee Suisse has studied a €2 billion (US$2.6 billion) residence project in Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island and is preparing to apply for an investment license, a local newspaper reported Wednesday.

WOW...2.6 Billion. Must be a nice project.

So far one American and one Swiss project for a total of $3.6 bln in this island. I wonder how much tax revenues these projects will contibute to the State budget. Man, communism in Vietnam is at its best

This island should be preserved as a nature sanctuary like the los Galapagos islands.

More investments will mean more money toward modernizing the country's infrastructures.

And to think that Phu Quoc was once known to the French colonialists as Poulo Condore, and where they used to jail Vietnamese political prisoners.

My #1 concern is what happens to those families who created the "Phu Quoc" brand of fish sauce - I don't mind living next to a "nuoc mam" factory, but I am not sure that most people can take it.

My #2 concern is that there is quite a bit of aquaculture going in Phu Quoc, and this Swiss project is a "residence project" - housing by itself does not add to economic activity.

I believe that there already is a $1 bils US project to build up a hotel complex in Phu Quoc. I mean, this small island is being super developed.

it's always a give and take, but the big question, which i'm sure is the reason for backlight's post, is whether benefits outweigh sacrifices. the sprawling complexes, sometimes covering the beaches themselves, and desire for horizontal space (as there is a height cap to the buildings set by the government) would destroy wildlife and the beauty of the island, not to mention pollution and many other drawbacks.

Mà phải nói VN dạo này có giá bạo. Bọn ngoại quốc đổ tiền bạc tỷ ào ào vô VN như nước vỡ bờ. Coi cái chú "Băng La Đét" kìa, vào WTO năm 1995 mà giờ vần còn nghèo xơ nghèo xác. Năm ngoái chú này thu hút chưa được 1 tỷ đô la đầu tư mà trong khi đó VN chưa phải là thành viên WTO mà đã hút tới 10 tỷ rồi

Thế mới nói mấy chú chống cộng không biết trời cao đất rộng, cứ ở đó mà tru tréo cái chuyện công nhân VN bị ngược đãi. Mẹ, không biết bao nhiêu thằng thèm thuồng muốn được "ngược đãi" mà cũng không thằng ngoại quốc nào thèm ngó ngàng tới kìa. Thế mới nói, kẻ biết nhịn nhục chịu gian khổ thì mới có thể vương lên nổi, mấy chú chống cộng đời nào hiểu được chân lý này

The people and companies that invest in Vietnam deserve to be treated with fairness. I wonder this kind of thinking is prevalent among Vietnamese people in which we laugh at the companies that invest in Vietnam when they fail and we get a good return when the companies are successful in Vietnam.

Is this a constructive way of thinking to improve Vietnam?

Sounds like a wise strategy to push forward further economic development. Sacrifices must be made in the process but in the long run, everything will even out



Very interesting and inspirational, indeed, to see more progress made in VN when compared to Bangladesh.

Don't mind them distractors. VN is still at an early stage of development and radical changes must be implemented although new ideas will be met with expected protests. The US faced the same situation back in 1866-1920 when entrepreneurs like Rockerfeller and Carnegie helped launch the Industrialization Age.

Poulo Condore was the name given to the Côn So+n island, not Phu' Quô'c.

Thanks for the correction. I'd rather see heavy duty development on Con Son than on Phu Quoc - Give the locals on Phu Quoc a chance to make a decent living on their own terms - Run their aquaculture farms, continue to manufacture the nuoc mam, build their own hotels with some help from outside so that they meet international standards, etc.
