The Spratley islands rightfully belongs to us Vietnamese since Vietnamese fishermen has been living and working on those islands for over 500 years and we were the ones who made the claim of sovereignty first.
shashoujian
^I don't think so. I haven't found anything about the Vietnamese connection to the Spratleys for "over 500 years" (nevermind settling on it). I've also found nothing about Vietnamese fishermen, but I did for Chinese. It was actually the French that colonized Indochina that the Spratleys had interest in those islands really began. And I don't think Vietnam was the first to claim the islands, because North Vietnam supported the PRC position, it wasn't until 1975 that Vietnam as a country asserted claim. Besides, China (PRC and ROC) did not have to assert claim since it was already in their possession.

The best or proper place to settle this issue is through the U.N. It's a shame that China is oppose to such action. If China indeed has more valid reason for such claim, there is no reason for such opposition. Afterall that's why there's U.N.

You said "As for calling people names, I'm sorry, but it's not exactly my problem that I'm unable to read. As I said earlier, we can talk about Tibet, go to the Chinese section because all those previous comments you made about Tibet is completely false". You're sorry but stating that it's not really your problem, is plain arrogance my friend. Again my inclusion of Tibet is just a reference. Please read between lines.

well...the vikings never claimed all of america, and besides, they left afterwards. the earliest settlers weren't chinese, but it was the chinese who claimed them first, as it first showed up under tang dynasty maps as chinese territory. the europeans even recognized islands as part of the ming, and later qing dynasty in their maps. that's why when the dutch, and later, the japanese surrendered the spratleys, they surrendered it to china.

china doesn't want UN intervention most likely because China is one country, and SE is many countries, and no SE country wants to see china get the islands.
*

We just have to agree to disagree. Your statement "china doesn't want UN intervention most likely because China is one country, and SE is many countries, and no SE country wants to see china get the islands" don't make sense. I'm sure each country wants to have the whole Spratley by themselves, not just China not having it. That's common sense.
shashoujian
LallyJane, the thing you lack the most is common sense. First of all, wouldn't it be great if every single border and territorial dispute could be handled through the U.N.? Too bad, this is not the case considering national interests comes before everything else, otherwise, why don't we settle Dokdo and Diao Yu over the U.N.? Huh? Oh yeah, and I could probably use the Japanese cultural genocide of the Ainu as reference. This is very simple, now get that through your head.

Secondly, it is not my arrogance that's the problem, if you cannot put up a valid argument, then don't argue. All you ever posted were general statements that you thought would help your case. Unfortunately, it does not, so instead of complaining about my comments, actually go and do some research, or else don't even bother. And again, your reference to Tibet is completely false - which by the way, is a completely different subject.
Sipsongpana
Where is the source that say Chinese claimed the islands since the Han dynasty? Vietnamese fisherman has been using the islands for over 500 years and there are still evidence of them using it as a base for fishing in the East Sea. Vietnam has been possessing the islands for hundreds of years and nobody said anything until the prospect of those islands containing oil and gas underneath that everybody scrambled for it and stealing it from a weakened Vietnam by force.

who cares about historical context...
we filipinos, cant afford to have a foriegn
territory just right near at our doorstep with the owner farther
away...
the only way is the philippine annexation
of the whole island... our country have been
challenging to take the matters in the international
court but china and vietnam dont have the
balls to do so because they knew that the philippines
have the strongest and legitimate argument...

Hey shashoujian! For your information, we in the democratic country don't just tell people to shut up or shoot them dead during a rally. Or do we just tell woman like me to just shut up once we run out of opinion. Come on, don't loose your cool okay.

Wow lol, if anyone's lacking IQ, it's you. First, learn some forum etiquette (how many quadruple posts did you have now...?), then learn to read. After all that, learn to stop masturbating to BS propaganda about freedom and democracy. And FYI, I live in a democratic society, and understands how it works, so don't lecture me on the BS you've learned through masturbating to Fox News.

I'm mot talking about his grammar but rather his foul language. Please read between lines my friend.

I admit my grammar is not that good since English is only my second language. I just don't like people telling me to shut up.

Also, I'm not the type of person that use multiple persona on this forum, just so it looks like somebody is on his side. Tsk! Tsk! Tsk! Tsk!

Lastly, I don't understand who you're referring to in your third sentence.
Datu Mandub
Maps are redrawn throughout history together with its political changes and dynasties come and go.

Like the Islands of Palawan up to Luzon are once under the dominion of the Sultan of Brunei, North Borneo was under the Sultanate of Sulu for hundred of years.....Indonesia to the Dutch, Tsing-Tao (China) to the Germans, Malvinas to the Argentinians etc...etc.

Among the claimants only the Philippines exercise it's sovereignty to hold an election in it's occupied island in the Spratley. But today there is an ongoing joint gas exploration in the disputed islands agreed by China, Philippines and Vietnam. I think this effort will benefit everyone.

You know who I'm referring to on my third sentence.

This is kind of out of topic but are you filipino lallyjane? If you are would you mind telling me how the overall majority of filipinos view chinese as? Just be brutally honest.
martin_nuke
You know that the Kalayaan Islands in the Spratleys is already Philippine territory according to international laws and it is very near Palawan but China is still claiming it because is has oil which the Philippines has already explored but the question is when would this dispute end? I think it will not end like Jew & Palestine with Israel, China & Taiwan with Taiwan and Philippines & Malaysia with Sabah, etc...

QUOTE
A second argument used by the Philippines regarding their geographical claim over the Spratly’s is that all the islands claimed by the Philippines lie within their archipelagic baselines, the only claimant who can make such a statement. The 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) stated that a coastal state could claim two hundred nautical miles of jurisdiction beyond its land boundaries. It is perhaps telling that while the Philippines is a signatory to UNCLOS, the PRC and Vietnam are not. The Philippines also argue, under Law of the Sea provisions, that the PRC can not extend its baseline claims to the Spratly’s because the PRC is not an archipelagic state. Whether this argument (or any other used by the Philippines) would hold up in court is debatable but possibly moot, as the PRC and Vietnam seem unwilling to legally substantiate their claims and have rejected Philippine challenges to take the dispute to the World Maritime Tribunal in Hamburg.

Why would the other claimants not want to take the dispute to the World Maritime Tribunal to be settled?

What are they afraid of? laugh.gif

Spratlys was discovered by a Filipino Tomas Cloma and he named it Freedomland but he realized that many countries wanted to invade it so he gave it to the Philippines and Marcos defended it till death.

The government is willing to defend it again and wants to annex it with Filipinos and willing to support the residents by giving them supplies. Anyone interested?

Those islands own by nobody, so now it's up for grab by anybody.
If you can pick them up, so be it, depending on your capability.

just like the lions, cheetahs, hyenas, vultures fighting for a piece of buffalo meat .

Its ours! I don't care who gets the legal rights to the islands... Cuz its ours in my heart!

I'll be the second draft and I will be using this .50 caliber Sniper Rifle designed to shoot down planes and helicopters.

Now if only Trillanes and company will do their thing here and direct their anger and hatred to the stationed chinese, I would consider them heroes.

Then the chinese declares war on us so i'll join you two in the draft...

but only 3 of us??? heck, who cares as long I can shoot some c....

Guns are no use, this will be a Naval conflict.

China is expanding its nuke subs to the South China Sea division.

Nuke subs are tricky, because even with US 's help, you don't want blow up a nuke sub in open ocean or else that wide area will be contaminated by radiation fallout.

In other words, they can shoot at you but you can't shoot at them, lol. Got to love those self-defensive machines
