Can't say I know much about Urdu, but it looks really similar to Hindi.

^^You're thinking of "hindustani", not "hindi." Bollywood movies are in hindustani(a mixture of urdu and hindi) and not hindi.

@Ahmed, Do you listen to music or watch movies ? If yes, just go pick up a few indian movies, watch them with subtitles and you'll pick it up in no time, seriously. That's how my bengali friend's mother learned it. embarassedlaugh.gif

Anyways for the start here are some more key phrases in urdu

Hindustani doesn't refer to any particular dialect, but it collectively refers to all the dialects of Hindi and Urdu. Most spoken dialects of Hindi (like in Bollywood movies) are very similar to Urdu, although standard Hindi sounds quite different (like in Indian news programmes).

I also learnt Hindi/Urdu from Bollywood movies as a kid, and so did many other Bengalis I know.

Shukria sap ap log شكريا سب آب لوك ( in my urdu I try to say Thanks you all ..)

many people think that Urdu is spoken in Pakistan and Hindi in India..
But the reality is that Urdu is spoken in India with 48 million native speakers !!
While the Pakistani native speakers of Urdu are just 10 million !!

Do you know that Hindi/Urdu native speakers are the second largest speakers of the world after Chinese Mandarin?

Do you believe that there are in India about 2900 daily newspapers in Urdu?

Urdu is great language but it is very strange that Urdu speakers are not very active to spread this language worldwide .. to compare look to the Chinese People .. every where in the world you will find Classes for Chinese language .. some of them even free ..

about learing Urdu from Indian movies .. you can learn but this is not the right way to learn any language ..

Because you need to know the grammer of any language .. and movies do not teach you the grammer..

about Indian movies .. I was addicted to Indian movies since I was a child in primary school .. I was believing that India was the best country in the world .. and later was believing that the Indian girls are the most beautiful girls of the world .. until I discovered the Ethiopian girls !!!!

My most favorite Indian movie was "Mother India" .. and my most favorite song in this movie is the song which is called " Dukh Bhare Din Beetey" ... Here are the words of this song:

dukh bhare din beetey re bhaiyaa ab sukh aayo re
rang jeevan mein naya laayo re
hoy hoy dukh bhare din beete re bhaiyaa, beete re bhaiyaa

dekh re ghataa ghirake aayi ras bhar-bhar lai
o ghataa ghirake aai, ho
chhed le gori man ki beena rimjhim rut chhai
o ghataa ghirake aai
prem ki gaagar laae re baadar bekal moraa jiyaa hoy
dukh bhare din beete re bhaiyaa ...

madhur-madhur manvaa gaaye apne bhi din aaye
o madhur manvaa gaaye, ho
saavan ke sang aaye jawani saavan ke sang jaaye, o
o madhur manvaa gaaye, ho
aaj to jii bhar naach le paagal kal na jaane re kyaa hoye
dukh bhare din beete re bhaiyaa ...

Unfortunately .. right now I'm not watching any Indian Movie .. Because as a Muslim you must not watch sexy or Erotic dances and songs .. and there is no Indian movie without erotic dances and songs

I'm not Urdu speaker .. but a beginner in learning Urdu

atcha means good and is opposite of Bura (bad)

For example you meet a friend and ask him in urdu:

Kay Hal Hai? (that is How are you?) .. He can answer:
Mai theek ho.. shukria .. aur ap? (That is: I'm fine .. thank you .. and you?) ..Here you can Say
Atcha .. (that is I'm good)

Accha can also mean "really?" and "okay." If someone is telling you something randomly, people say "accha" to acknowledge what you said, or if they can say it in a questioning manner because they're saying "oh really?" in response to someone else.

It's not the proper way to learn but if you've been watching many films in a certain language since childhood, then you can pick up the grammar and vocabulary quite easily with hardly any effort. I'm sure that might have been the case for you aswell? By the way, are you Ethiopian?
