SUMPAH PEMUDA

Does the youth of today live by the oath made by our predecessors? Or have we forgotten the struggles for independence?
purnomor
Indonesia should engage in lots of pomp and circumstance to commemorate historical events (Proclamation, Youth's Oath, Battle of Surabaya, Pancasila Day) involving the entire populace, akin to Anzac Day in Australia (which actually celebrates a military defeat caused by incompetent blunders).

This way, the new generations will never forget about past sacrifices and will always appreciate the independence they have.

I bet purnomor is patriotic....... biggthumpup.gif

A patriot must be able to critically examine its own nation and people and not be afraid to admit the faults and failures, i am afraid purnomor is kinda short in this area... he could improve in this department.

good question, I'm also curious at the moment...
Majapahitans
Regarding patriotic....., there's a wayang story regarding this story.
Of course wayang tradition of Java based on Indian epic like Mahabharata and Ramayana, but often with indigenious interpretation and storytelling.

Lovestruck Rahwana has drag his country, Alengkapura into war with Ayodhyapura.
By kidnapping Rama's wive, Shinta, he start the war with Rama and army of Apes (Wanara).

Rahwana had 3 younger siblings:
Kumbakarna , a peace loving giant who love to sleep.... embarassedlaugh.gif His ultimate dream is to sleep in peaceful world.

Sarpakenaka , an independent and free willing female giant who often unable to control her lust and love to chase goodlooking guys..... icon_twisted.gif

Wibhisana (sometimes called Gunawan Wibhisana), a refined, gentle and very goodlooking knight, noble and idealistic, almost like a priest.

Seeing how his older brother (the King of Alengka) Rahwana has become a tyrant and led his country to chaos and war, Wibhisana took Rama's side to fight his own brother. To restore (in his ideal) the justice and peace in his kingdom.

On the other hand, although disapprooving all Rahwana wrongdoings, the peaceloving Kumbakarna put aside his wish to have nothing to do with war, and join his brother to defend people of Alengka from Rama's invasion force.
When Kumbakarna fallen, all the apsaras and goddesses sang heavenly sad song and pour celestial flower petals on him, mourn his heroic death. "Right or wrong, it's my country" Kumbakarna has said.

Kumbakarna and Wibhisana, both are considered as good people in Wayang story, although they stand on different side. Wibhisana stay true in his ideals, even fighting his own country and brothers. Kumbakarna stay true in his loyalty to his kin and country.

Between those two..., which one is Patriotic...?
What do you guys think...? icon_wink.gif

Well I guess it depends on which Ramayana version you are interpreting...
And more importantly how nuance you would define what really patriotic is. icon_confused.gif

Both warriors can be considered treasonous and patriotic all at the same time
and only they know their own intentions to do what they did or role to play.

Next perplexing question is who the real terrorists are and who are the freedom fighters? biggrin.gif
