So the Philippines is part of the Ring of Fire.... how firey is it? How many times do you frequent a thing like this? Daily? Monthly? Yearly? Is it normal for you to feel the Earth trembling so much that you mastared the art of sleeping through it etc?

And where is the most Violent region in the Philippines? Where is the most calm? confused.gif

At least five imperceptible to perceptible earthquakes occur per day. However, there are some regions of the country, which are considered more earthquake prone than others, such as eastern Mindanao, Leyte and Samar which host an average of 16 felt earthquakes per year. The most recent destructive earthquakes were the July 16, 1990 Luzon earthquake (Ms = 7.8), which 1was generated by movement along the northern segment of the Philippine Fault Zone and the November 15, 1994 Mindoro earthquake (Ms = 7.1), which likewise triggered tsunami.

a little bit of side info here: beerchug.gif

the philippines is part of the ring of fire but it has more typhoons than earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. around 50 typhoons visit the RP every year. for the 1st 3 months alone, i think there have been 15. we experienced one typhoon just last 1st week of june. i wasn't able to come to cebu because i got stranded in bohol. fastcrafts weren't allowed to travel.

how is the pi system of warning of impending disasters? Is there some philippine weather warning system channel on the tv or radio? are many filipinos even available to tv and radio?
BatangDamo
Floods, one of the things that i hate. Usually happens after a strong typhoon, but somehow theres a comfort after hearing early in the radio that classes will be cancelled.

sure.gif I think 50 is too exagerated!

an average of 19-25 typhoons hit or pass the country in a year!
Forumwalker
yes, they do pass. they don't get to pass most of the mainland but Batanes always gets hit. no tv there though.

the PAG-ASA(Phil. Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration) monitors and reports the weather situation in the national level. yes, television is being accessed by the majority. much more for the radio which is cheaper and people from towns often listen to local radio stations.

the most "violent" place in terms of storms is batanes. this place is located up north and this is a group of islands. so if there's a storm, this is the place that's first hit that's why the weather's kind of erratic. but the place is gorgeous. the houses are made of stones fit for typhoons.

EDIT:
if i'm not mistaken, i think the worst earthquake was that one in the early 90's ('91 or '92). i remember that it was after school and i was in this place for tutorial and i dropped my pencil. when i picked it up i thought i was suffering from vertigo because i was very dizzy. it was later on that i realized that it was an earthquake which claimed hundreds of filipino lives. the hotel in baguio city, hyatt regency was completely destroyed and many were killed. there was also this school in cotabato city where many students died. a picture was flashed on tv wherein this person was still holding a ballpen while buried under piles of rubble. a girl's legs were also crushed by a huge thing (i think it was a wall or something) and she was in agonizing pain while she was still interviewed. the reporters can't do anything about her situation because they can't lift the piles on top of her. i remember she said something like: "get me out of here, even if my legs are cut off".

i can't remember where i was when that quake happened for i was only 4 years old...
