It also didn't take much calcium to have an effect: an extra serving of dairy a day--a cup of milk or a thumb-size piece of cheese--translated into 2 lbs. less weight. Calcium, Novotny explains, increases the body's ability to break down fat while reducing the rate of fat synthesis. But calories still matter for weight control; the best way to stay trim is to eat less and exercise more. And remember: low-fat or fat-free dairy products are rich in calcium, as are broccoli, nuts, beans and sardines. --By David Bjerklie


I read an article like this one a long time ago but dismissed it because it was published by a source with an obvious conflict of interest. But for the past few weeks I haven't had any dairy because I've been too lazy to lug two gallons of milk whenever I went to get groceries. And my waistline was getting flabbier. So yesterday I finally bought some skim milk and nonfat yogurt again and had a few servings.. and today my waist feels tighter. I think I'll keep nonfat dairy as a staple of my diet. biggthumpup.gif

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Girls who get enough dairy products in their diets may stay leaner than their peers, study findings suggest.

Researchers found that among 323 9- to 14-year-old girls in Hawaii, those who got more calcium from dairy sources tended to weigh less and have less fat around the middle than girls who ate less dairy. On the other hand, body weight tended to rise in tandem with soda intake.

The link between dairy intake and lower abdominal fat was particularly strong among girls of Asian descent, who made up 47 percent of the study group.

Since the 1960s, U.S. children's milk consumption has fallen off significantly, in favor of soda and sugary juices. The trend is thought to be one of the factors fueling the nation's ever-growing rate of childhood obesity and excess weight.

A number of studies, mostly in adults, have shown that calcium may be key in maintaining normal body weight and fat stores. One reason may be the nutrient's effects on hormones that help store calories as fat.

In the new study, reported in the Journal of Nutrition, calcium from dairy sources, but not non-dairy foods, was related to lower weight and less abdominal fat.

This suggests that "the dairy portion of the calcium intake is the key factor," write the study authors, led by Dr. Rachel Novotny of the University of Hawaii in Honolulu. It's possible, they explain, that other nutrients in milk play an important role in weight balance.

However, the researchers add, girls in the study got relatively little of their calcium from non-dairy sources -- perhaps too little for these foods to show an effect on weight and body fat.

Non-dairy sources of calcium include certain green vegetables such as broccoli and spinach, fortified soy milk, and calcium added to orange juice and cereals.

For the study, which was funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, girls and their parents kept a record of the foods the children ate over three days. The researchers found that the average calcium intake fell far short of the recommended level for children in this age group -- 736 milligrams (mg) per day, versus the recommended 1,300 mg a day.

When girls did get relatively higher levels of dairy calcium, though, it appeared to make a difference on the scale and near the waistline.

For reasons that are unclear, the effect on body fat was stronger for Asian girls than for white girls, according to Novotny and her colleagues. They speculate that ethnic differences in which dairy products are usually consumed, or in eating habits -- having small amounts of dairy throughout the day, for instance, rather than a single large serving-may help explain the finding.

According to the researchers, soda may tack on pounds by adding calories to kids' diets, or by replacing milk. Milk, they note, has a range of nutrients, including protein and fat, which means it is metabolized relatively slowly.

Soda contains only sugar, which is quickly metabolized, leading to a blood sugar surge followed by a precipitous drop that triggers hunger.

Considering this, the researchers conclude, drinking soda in place of milk is likely to add on pounds.

hey i wonder if there is merit to this, when i was younger i used to drink a lot of milk and people complimented on my natural skinniness

now i'm still skinny but not like i was in the good old days - and my lvl of activity has stayed the same

Well, it's just natural to get less skinny when you get older.

Do you have a really flat stomach? Because calcium from dairy supposedly keeps off abdominal fat. I drank a lot of milk too when I was a toddler but was a little chubster because I also ate a lot of candy.

alas, old age cometh to me too at long last

my stomach is flat now, but only because i've started exercising regularly. its not very flat but its less of a kangaroo pouch than average people i think

haha basically its less convex than before.
also helps i don't touch soda anymore

My next thread in this section will have to be about the evils of sugar. There is a whole slew of bad things it does to your body ranging from teeth to blood glucose levels to accelerated aging of the skin.

calcium wards off fat, chocolate contains a chock-full of anti-oxidants, red wine contains polyphenols and reservatol helps does a myriad of wonderful things for you body...yaddy yaddy yadda

the last thing we need is more fat people chewing on inconclusive research and chugging down more milk and wine and shoving their faces with chocolate thinking it'll work miracles.

The good old fashioned way of eating a balanced diet and getting in some exercise is enough to maintain your weight. this doesn't go without saying calcium is just as important as other vitamins and trace elements.

besides, a good majority of asians are lactose intolerant = bloated stomach and inflammation

Yep ya know those sumo wrestlers from Japan.

They get so huge from all those eating.

I've read that they had lots of starchy food to build up their weight.

This is because your body wil always burn up the carbohydrates that is in your stomach before it burns up the fat.

Excess first then storage.

If you eat lots of carbhydrates that supply your body daily needs of energy consuption you will end up burning no fat or even worst gaining fat.

The less carbs you eat the more your body metabolism is going to rely on body fat for energy.

hmm I don't think it would work that fast. now if you had said 14 days or even 7 it would have been a bit more believable.

Did I say anywhere to drink as much milk as possible? Of course everything should be taken in moderation.

Seriously, I do not know one Asian person that is lactose intolerant. AND, I know practically every Asian that lives in Washington.

Alright, yeah some are tolerant of milk. Most of should be if we all ate it with cereal and any other common American food. But I haven't heard about lactose intolerance among Asians before I got on here. Then my friend started to mention that he was. I can handle some amounts of milk, but it does make me feel bad on some days, and I can't have ice cream in the mornings. Hahaha, well I guess almost anything in the morning before going somewhere might be bad.

Ooo, ouch, that sounds pretty small. Anything after that would cause a huge rumbling in the stomach as I have heard.

That's a small amount for a normal-sized guy who eats 2500 calories a day, yeah. It's not that small for me considering I don't eat more than 1500 calories a day.
