TOKYO — Japanese pop star Hikaru Utada on Saturday announced on her website that she has divorced husband Kazuaki Kiriya, a video artist, after four and a half years of marriage. The 24-year-old singer said the divorce, formalized Friday, resulted from differences that had emerged "over the direction they want to head for and the concept of a married couple" and because of lack of communication while they were pursuing their respective careers.

The couple met during the making of Utada's promotional videos and CD tracks and married in September 2002. In a message on the same website, Kiriya, 38, said he is thankful that they had shared a happy time.
