I have heard many horrid stories from friends and in the news about Australia being very racist. But at the same time there are so many non-white people emmigrate to Australia. And their leader, excuse me for saying this; look like an a$$hole to me...
John Howard,

And how come he seem to be in office forever in Australia?

I've heard it's kind of racist but I've never been there. It depends on who you talk to I guess. Outside of Americans I've seen very few people admit that there is a decent amount of racism that occurs in their respective countries.

Yes, Anglo-Saxon Aussies are racist because they think every "coloured" person is out to attack their "values". Although alot of people with a non-Anglo-Saxon consider those "values" to be inferior.
BTW, to understand whether Australia is racist or not you must look at the plight of the Aboriginals.

I've been to Aussie land a few times and never experienced any sort of racism. Everything seems very laid back over there.

Also, before they dispise the fact that Australia is considered to be part of Asia - pacific. They don't want to relate to those poor east and southeast asian people. Now they see east and southeast asia as a growing power, suddenly they want to join every asian organizations like the ASEAN and want to be part of the asian community. Pathetic if you ask me......

Aussies are not naturally racist
They may come accross racist because their a little ignorant side
Culturally they're from convict stock and are more apt to question authority and old colonial values...they're very aware of their negative history in regards to Australlian Aborigines and don't have the same contempt that some Americans feel towards African Americans

Well,I am in OZ,I'd like to say they're the nicest people u could ever meet. Nothing bad ever happens in OZ,except the occasional drought and recently some barber attracted outrage for not paying salaries to his apprentices. They hear more bad stuff about foreigners in their news and newspapers,so maybe they are cautious with foreigners rather than being racist.
Anyway,John Howard is an @$$ hole and is actually the butt of jokes in all Australian newspapers even in the pro-government newspapers.he's often protrayed as a short bald man with jutting lips.

What I remember from our family's couple years in Adelaide - the Italians and Greeks stuck to themselves. Clean and tight nit community - The Socceroos really benefit from their participation in Soccer. Aussies didn't seem to dislike them
