we are inferiority complex. but what is mean?
Graham_Cracker07
People say that alot on here about Filipinos because Filipinos are always saying they're mixed w/ something else, or they're not really Asians, or they try to relate to other cultures. Stuff like that. So they say Filipinos have an "inferiority complex" meaning Filipinos aren't happy with who they are so they claim to be something else or act like other groups.

Yeah, some Filipinos do have an inferiority complex. But also, i think alot of other Asians don't understand us. They want to put us into a box, but they don't understand how complex our culture is. Sometimes it's hard for Filipinos to find their true selves.
KristlehI
^no the problem is other people's obsession with being "asian". hahaha. some wonder why we are different culturally. they think that "hey you're asians you're supposed to eat using chopsticks, to worship buddha etc. etc. etc."

well, I think we're quite secure with being different from our neighbors it's just that some can't accept it. biggrin.gif

^ Agreed, its like confused filams and other asians asking always asking naively or mean spiritedly or as a way of putting us down, if Filipinos are asian, hispanic or pacific islander lol. When in reality people in Pinas couldn't care less.
jhonnz
yeah it's like Filipinos are not known for being distinctively unique than our other southeast asian neighbors. our uniqueness is still being propagated that's why many are going out of our country to tell other people who we really are.. haha lol

hehe many non-Filipinos are confused with Filipinos which made some Filipinos confused of themselves. lol again

In a "fobs" perspective: It's not as much that filipinos have an inferiority complex, it's just that in general, filipinos don't have a "concrete" identity. I mean, we're a predominantly christian state, in a vicinity where it's mostly Eastern religions. A lot of our compatriots have western surnames, yet we have malayan/asian features etc...makes you wonder "What the heck are we?!?". In those survey forms, have you ever wondered: Are we Asians or Pacific Islanders?
We have a more complicated identity that any other Asian culture, hard to define what a filipino is...imho i don't think we suffer inferioty complex. We're just people who are overwhelmed by uniqueness. because of that we are either compelled to distinguish ourselves and take pride, or dissociate from being a 'filipino'.

I'd learn basic English structure before worrying about deeper concepts.
Graham_Cracker07
^ Nice explanation. So true. I love that fact that we are so unique. I guess alot of other people don't like that so they say we have an "inferiority complex"

It's a valid question, though. We're located between Asia and the main Pacific proximity. It's just that sometimes, I'd have to pause before filling in "Asian".

alright japanese people are also pacific islanders
Graham_Cracker07
^ Nah, I think it's different for them. Japan has no connection at all to Polynesians, Melanesians, and Micronesians. But Filipinos have connections because we all speak Austronesian languages and have some cultural similarities. Japan's culture is very close to Mainland Asian culture. Filipino culture is somewhere in b/t Mainland Asian culture and Pacific culture. It's not as simple as saying "Well, they're from islands in the Pacific, so they're Pacific Islanders" It's more about the culture of the people. So as for Filipinos, I still think we're Asian, but i'm not gonna hate on someone who wants to call themself Pacific Islander, as long as they know they're Filipino.

I've always known we're asian. I mean originating from natives of taiwan was a given.

Your stupid for even making this comment

Then ask them, but this topic was totally irrelevant to the comment you made which is why your an idiot. If your trying to start s*it against the chinese then just come right out and do it in chinese chat or in a topic in japanese chat pertaining to what you were talking about but no instead you chose to bring it up here in filipino chat for what? Yeah you are indeed an idiot. icon_rolleyes.gif

ever wondered why Filipinos don't fall under the "Asian" category? It's mainly due to the fact that Filipinos evolved into what is distinctly "Filipino". Filipino's have made their identity known. As for the "Inferiority Complex" well here's a little something that will pop your bubbles; those Filipinos allegedly with "inferiority complex" compose of a very small percentage. Majority of Filipinos are proud of who they are (as Filipinos) although when asked if whether they are Filipino or not they could not easily give an answer BECAUSE of the fact that Filipinos don't like to separate themselves from others. For them we are all human beings. To say "yes, I am Filipino, why?" would sound stereotypical, separating one's self from the rest. Since Filipinos enjoy community they feel uneasy giving such comments oabout what they are.

No Asian country has been colonized and settled on more than the Philippines (I think)

No Asian country is as diverse as the Philippines

We have Filipinos who look Spanish, some who look Chinese, some who look Black, some who look Pacific Islander and some who just look mixed and of course those who look Malay

There is really no defined look for a Filipino person whilst for the Eastern Asians it is the stereotypical slant eyed, pale yellow, straight hair look

They just jealous we all look so different

Philippines (Spanish, Americans)
India (Aryans, Mongols, British)
Indonesia (Portuguese, Dutch)
Malaysia (Portuguese, British)
China (Mongols, Manchu)
Vietnam (Chinese, French)

Filipinos are celebrated (by others) for their shortcomings. It is a sad reality Filipinos must learn to accept but not live with. But based on what I've noticed, the poor state of the Philippines should be the least of the worries we Filipinos should worry about. There really isn't much unity and cooperation among Filipinos, may mga naiinggit sa ibang tao just because they seem more successful than others and this leads to hate for that particular person. Other Asian cultures aren't like this at all. But once again we are Filipinos.
