San Francisco-based Friendster has won a patent for online social networks. The patent was filed in 2003, and was awarded on June 27th. Friendster’s founder Jonathan Abrams is listed as the inventor, and the patent covers a “system, method, and apparatus for connecting users in an online computer system based on their relationships within social networks.” The main claim is the “degrees of separation” idea that has been implemented by business networks like LinkedIn.

Six Degrees, one of the earliest social networks, also had a patent in the social networking space, but it was sold to Tribe and LinkedIn in 2003. Apparently, the two patents don’t overlap.

Friendster has 9 to 10 million users, but was famously eclipsed in the US market by MySpace. Friendster says they’ll try to protect their intellectual property - having won a patent, it’s possible they could try to extract licensing fees from their competitors, or even sue them for patent infringement. Clearly, this is another case of patents damaging innovation - it’s not good for anyone but the patent holder.

It seems that LinkedIn would be the most likely target of any action. But since the patent is fairly broad, there’s speculation that MySpace, Bebo, Tagworld, Tribe and others could also face difficulties.

if you're a Filipino and you know how to surf the net and have an email add it's already a requirement to have a friendster account. If you have one then you're a certified internet user. thats what most Filipino teenagers think. it's like you're not "in" in the internet world if you don't have one. heck, even my gf's parents have friendster accounts. bwahaha lol
