This happens a lot with South Asians who live around here. They all like to differentiate between themelves, which is fine. Some are Gujurati, some are Punjabi, etc. However lately I've been seeing more and more feuds about it. A large amount of them fuel from one group thinking that they're better than another, or the best.
I'm Punjabi, and a Sikh. I'm very proud of my culture and heritage, as are a lot of my relatives, however I still have a great interest in the other cultures of India, and strive to learn more and more about them.
When my parents told me that (and don't quote me on this, I'm not sure if it's correct) that Sikhs wanted their own country to call Khalistan, I was kind of devestated. I'm really proud to be able to call myself an Indian. Indian culture in general is just such an amazing mix of different things. It's really amazing because it's so diverse.

Are your parents saying that Sikhs should have their own country, or are they saying they as Sikhs would want a Khalistan?
Personally, I think they have a right to their views, as long as they don't say all Hindus should be thrown out of India, or berate other indians, advocate violence against Indians, or call for open secession against India, which isn't going to do anyone any good.
Gujjus Vs Punjus rivalries or Punjus Vs Tamil rivalries is something very common and is to be expected as there are many cultural differences. Most of the time ppl of each ethnic group rarely interacts with the other as far as I am concerned.
Many ppl who downplay other cultures have serious insecurity issues, and the only way they can make themselves feel better is by putting others down.
