Has anyone ever eaten any puffer fish here?
barkerintokyo
Of course. Fugu is really good. It is really expensive too.

There's nothing to worry about eating it. I've never heard of anyone dying from eating fugu before. If someone did, it would be on the news because that would be murder.

You need a special license to cut fugu so anyone who cuts fugu without the license will get fined or arrested.

fugu... that's the name for japanese pufferfish?
i heard the poison is so deadly it can paralyze you and kill you with one biteful.
its a powerful neurotoxin that goes straight to the central nervous system and brain

wow.. all the chefs in japan who prepare the fish are highly skilled. if they weren't then they would be in trouble! and have no customers!!!
barkerintokyo
It's really not that difficult to remove the poison. It exists in only one small organ inside of the fish. If you remove it correctly, the fugu is completely harmless.

but aren't there different ways to prepare fugu? you can also cook them? and aren't there different kinds of fugu? the most dangerous apparently being 'tora-fugu' and also the most expensive and delicious?

Fugu dishes are usually expensive. One meal can cost $100 to $200 per person at a famous restaurant. But there are inexpensive fugu dishes (from $15 to $20) available at some restaurants. It's said that the most poisonous fugu, "Tora-fugu," is the most delicious. Tora-fugu is expensive and can cost over one hundred dollars at a fish market. Nowadays, prepared-fugu are sold at grocery stores and online stores, and fugu are eaten at Japanese homes. Fugu dishes are becoming more common than they used to be. Winter is the best season to eat fugu.
Blow Fish dishes:

Fugu-sashi
Thinly sliced raw fugu. Served with ponzu dipping sauce (mixture of citrus juice and soy sauce).
Fugu-chiri
Vegetables and fugu are simmered in konbu dashi soup in a large pot. Served with ponzu dipping sauce.
Fugu Kara-age
Floured and deep fried.
Fugu Hire-zake
Grilled fin is put in hot sake drink.

Speaking of this. Didn't they recently figure out how to breed this fish without it's poison? I think I saw that somewhere. Or maybe it is something are planing...

Nope, i haven't.
kpjoon
my friend is always talking about this... I want to try it...
barkerintokyo
Yeah, i've heard about the genetical modified fugu. I've never tried it before.

Fugu is awesome but it's not for everyone. People who don't like sushi and other raw foods, people who don't like seafood, and people who are just queasy about the poison probably shouldn't eat it.
