I come from Europe and live in Aisa for more than 10 years now. I love the Asian people, not only in the Philippines, for their charm, friendliness and their looks. There is one thing I don't understand. Why do many of them want to be white? We Europeans want to be brown and seek the sun whenever it is available.
I often see women who bleach their faces with soap or other stuff that must be terribly unhealthy. If they wear little it looks horrible, a brown body and a white face, zombie like.
My question to the girls: Why do you do it?
My question to the boys: Obviously the girls would not do it if there would be no "market" for it. Why do you like it?
Excuse me if I am insensitive but I would like to know :-)

Its quite obvious...
Well there are certain things to consider, in the past people used to think pale/white skin was beautiful because it portrays you as a non-laborer but a social elite or aristocrat, one who doesn't work out in the sun. Now when the industrial age flared up, rich people would often take trips to newly founded resorts in the Caribbean and such and would end up getting tanned, soon enough getting a tan meant you had enough money to visit such places and thus became the fad for the lower classes. In a way, White skin is still considered a sign of beauty and aristocracy throughout the world.
Also, Philippines has been colonized by Spain for 400 years or so then the US, think about the influence they did, they were the ones in power. There are alot(over statement?) but not all of Filipinos who has the colonial mentality until now, everything foreign is superior to them. The colonizers were White thus they tend to think looking white is beautiful. You can also blame the non-stop barrage of mainstream stereotypical White standards of beauty all over the world not just the Philippines. Dang, 7 year old girl is vulnerable enough to want to look like the woman she sees on a TV commercial.
I think this mentality is a disgust....
Personally, I have no preference in skin tone since anyone can look good being tan or pale. Caucasians tend to look very weird when they tand at a tanning salon, its so unnatural.

I know the reasons. Europeans used to wear clothes and umbrellas to remain white to show that they can afford not to work outside. Nowadays we want to be brown because that shows that we don't have to work and can afford lying in the sun.
What I don't understand is how someone can find zombie looking people attactive the same way that one can find artificial sun studio tans attractive. Both I find completely unnatural.
It just does not fit. It looks sick, almost dead. What do guys find in a girl that has a pale white face but a brown body?
I know, beauty lies in the eyes of the behoder

I am not a Philipina,I have gone to the island with some friends who were natives.I noticed the same thing with the soaps and creams.I ask my friends why are they subjecting themselves to this harsh skin treatment. If you were to read what the soaps and creams contain, it is unbelievable when you think how the soaps and creams open them up for skin cancer under such intense UV conditions.
My friends and a few girls I had a chance to ask replied,it looks good.To me it looked just the opposite, you would see Philipina's with ghostly white faces and bronze neck and legs.Very silly looking if you ask me.These lady's don't understand that there natural skin color is so attractive.Unfortunately the female and males of the Philippines much like many other Asian cultures have been brainwashed into thinking that discolored skin is attractive. This is not found just in the Philippines but also in Japan,China and countless other countries. What a shame!!!!!

Especially if u live in SE Asia, even if ur skin is tanned and not dark, because of the whether conditions, it makes ur skin look dirty, that why people want white skin because it looks more "clean". Asian skin is different from white peoples skin and doesn't look as good if it is under the sun.

White people were in power in the philippines and the natives who were brown ppl were the peaseant... and the peaseant is only chance to get out of peasant world is if they are mestizo mixed white/look white...
today it survive cuz they too stupid to realize its self hatred. if they dont like the natural tan skin of their bodies they should roll out the philippines cuz the climate make u naturally tan.

i think it's because pinays just want to be different. it's like pinays are so used to having and seeing fellow filipinos with brown skin and it's just a way of being "different".
i read a post here that said europeans want to be tan. see, it's just like that. europeans want to be tan because their skin color (which is pale/white/light) is the same with almost everyone they know in europe.
another example: i notice that koreans and japanese dye their hair. i also think that it's a matter of being different in order to become more noticeable. their features are almost the same as their peers so they alter their looks.

yeah, goes along the lines of "what you don't have, you want." most europeans are light, thus, they want to be tanned. it's vice versa for the philippines. also, in the philippines, there is a general perception that the lighter you are, the richer or thre better your living standard is. plus, most celebrities and people considered beautiful in philippine society are light skinned. when society sees this, it's no wonder why most want to become light.

erm, i thought it was kinda stupid too.

i mean if it were actually funny i might not find it as moronic, but eh. it just seems like a useless post that basically shows people that you in fact use skin whitener and that you think it makes people beautiful. i don't get where the punchline was. the post actually surprised me, especially coming from you. weird. now i know you didn't mean to offend (as you said so at the end of your post), but that post was just weird as hell. fu-king random.
as for the topic, i don't find anything wrong with dark skin and i don't see what's so wrong about the skin colour of the people in the second picture. i kinda agree with ahnyounghaseyouh's opinion. then again, it might just be because a lot of women (and men, i guess) are never fully satisfied with how they look, so they just try to change the way they look in the hopes that it'd make them look better.
i mean, mestizas and tisays, tsinays and kastilà get tanned because they think they're too light.

In mass comm point of view, it is one of the 4 "disvalues" in Filipino drama and film written by Nicanor Tiongson..
These are
1.
White is beautiful2. Shows are the best
3. Hurrah for the underdog
4. All is right in the world
"Our colonial aesthetics today may be partly rooted to various dramatic forms (during both Spanish and American colonial regimes), w/c is populared and perpetuated the value of
white is beautiful. During Spanish times, the komedya not only made the "indio" cheer and champion the cause of white Europeans who, favoured by God and miracles, invariably defeated the Moros but also demanded a standard of beauty that legitimized and made ideal the bastard or the mestizo. To be a prince or princess, one had to "look the part". One had to have
"matangos ang ilong, malalaking mata, maliit ang bibig. (parang si betty?

2 He or she also had to have "magandang tindig" which is simple language boiled down to "tall like a white man".
Likewise, in the passion for sinakulo, natives playing Christ and the Virgin, were chosen on the basis of their resemblance to both istampitas and images of the Christ and the Virgin both of which always unmistakably and invarible Caucasian. It is not surprising that the term
"parang birhen". became a stuck metaphor among native poets in describing the idealized beauty of any woman.
During the American regime, bodabil/stage show not only singke out Filipinos who could do imitations of Elvis Presley and Tom Jones, but necessarily also favored the Caucasian-looking either as the closer imitation of these "originals"or as the "leading man types" above the "ethnic-looking" who inspite of their often superior talent, were regulated to slapstick comedies and roles of maids or minor friends.[...] American movies have likewise provided Filipinos with new gods and goddesses.
Clearly then, the colonial aesthetics of contemporary Philippine movies are both derivation and outgrowth and a magnification of colonial easthetics in our Spanish past and American present.
[..] The values of white is beautiful has been and is one of the most ridiculous and destructive expressons of our colonial mentality".Filipinas have lavished money on surgery and trips abroad to have their eyes wider, their noses sculptured to aquiline or at least decently Caucasian proportions ect [...]
because of this value, our women have dyed or streaked their hair blonde or rust. because of it, Filipinas through the decades have covered up their golden skins with powders and make-ups.[...]
because white is beautiful, brown has become criminally ugly. The adulaltion for the white has imposed on the Filipino a national inferiority complex, a deep-seated unconscious 'conviction' that we are an ugly people, not worthy of being seen on screen, too homely to be photographed beside the beautiful caucasian race, 'exotic' at best (a term we borrowed from caucasians), anthropoid at worst..[...]-------
tama naman sya diba..
nakakahiya man isipin.

I am a humorous person but personally i dont find any humor in Najjiah's post. To add salt to injury, crzyflwr's comment on she's prettier than those in the lower picture didnt make me that crazy about her neither. Eh ano kung ganun itsura nila? Pilipino pa rin naman pareho sila eh. Arent we becoming even more racists by feeling we are above them? Fine, let us not be hypocrites and act as if we arent happy we dont look like them but do we have to be blunt about it? Ha, di lang natin alam, kung wala sila, sinong magtataguyod ng kultura natin? Eh ano kung hindi malaporselana ang kutis nila? I bet they have better characters than the rest of the Filipino community whose minds are corrupted by ambition, greed, power etc. Basta, proud akong mahalintulad sa kanila. Wala akong dapat ikahiya. Dahil ang kagandahan, nasa utak lang yan. So para sakin, maganda sila

I was raised by a young EXTREMELY MAGANDA Pinay Nanny from the time I was age 5 until I was 11. Her name was Rosemary and she was age 11 when she began to take care of me and finished when she was age 17and moved somewhere else with her family. She was from Somewhere in Luzon, North of Manila from what I recall. I wish So Much that my one living parent, my ,mom, still had contact with her. She would be about 40 or 41 years old now.
One thing that I remember about her, among many other wonderful things , is that she had very beautiful white skin and such lovely brown, almond shaped eyes. I am now in my 30s and recalling back to when she so lovingly took care of me, she was way ahead of the times we were in back then, fashion-wise. while most people where dressed in horribly loud, obnoxious clothing during 1976 to 1981, she usually wore a short black skirt and tight, low-cut, bare midriff top or a cute sun-dress which accentuated her virtually perfectly shaped body and flawless white skin complexion. She had thick and shiny black hair that was soft and silky to the touch. From what I remember, she never used any skin whitening products, just standard moisturizers. This Angel was extremely loving, supportive and protective of me. I recall when I was betwwen 5 and 7, I would get frightened by thunderstorms and Rosemary would cuddle me up to her in the bed and reassure me that we were perfectly safe. She really spoiled me and I was SO CRUSHED when she had to move away with her family.
The only negative consequense of being so loved and spoiled by Rosemary was that when I was back in California and in the schools here, it was a major shock to me to interact with the typical Stuck Up White American Girls! I was HORRIBLY MISTREATED and HUMILIATED by them all the way until I graduated High School, and as a result, would never even consider speaking with one ever again, if given the choice!
Anyway, back to Rosemary. This Wonderful young lady is the reason that I absolutely Love and Adore Filipinas and just about all Southeast Asian women to this day and hope and pray that God will be so kind as to help match me to the one most suitable for me (and for her.) I now am looking for a Filipina similar to Rosemary, who has natuarally white skin. Despite this, I still have nothing against Filipinas with various shades of brown skin. They really should not try to put whiteners on their face, as early posters to this discussion pointed out, it looks strange for a girl to have an artificially white face and brown body (as I have personally observed happen among many of the Flight Attendants of Philippine Airlines.) In my opinion, the vast majority of the young women who have taken the trouble of artificially whitening their faces, they would look prettier if they simply left what God created them with alone, other than perhaps LIGHTLY applying some simple makeup, such as lipstick, eye shadow, etc.
Although my "Dreamgirl" for marriage is a naturally white-skin toned Filipina, age 18 to 23 either with a BSN degree, or well along the way of completing it, I would never shut the door on "typical" Filipina with a light or dark brown complexion....and that Natural Heart of Gold that the Vast Majority of Filipinas possess. God Bless All Sweet Pinays and other girls of Southeast Asia. White Skinned, Brown Skinned, or anywhere in between, they have an Extra Special Beauty that goes far beyond only skin-deep!
