Japanese phones can be used in the states. You just have to find a cell phone retailer in your local Chinatown. They will do some kind of surgery on the phone. tada...it will work fine. But some advance features of the phone won't work because most of the US carriers don't provide the services yet. (such as wireless video streaming.)

My suggestion is to get a motorola krazr k1. it comes with 2 million pixel camera, mp3, and all that. It looks sharp and elegant! I just got one last month. It works great and the mp3 audio quality is superb!!!

Not true. NTT Docomo is rolling out a plan for international users. Which means, the phone itself needs to actually support the network in the area where they are roaming. Also, 3G Vodafone (Now Softbank) has some models that works fine overseas, since its a quad-band phone. The later phones, with 1SEG technology is currently not available anywhere else though. 1SEG = TV/Audio terrestial broadcast, meaning you can watch TV on your phone.

What kind of 'surgery'? AFAIK Its not so much it won't work in the states as to the network in the states isn't as quick to roll out as people in Japan. There is simply not enough demand for services to rollout HSDPA, google it if you don't know what it means. So far, there are not many people who access internet over their phones to demand it, while in Japan, the phones send out e-mails, not SMS, therefore they need a bigger bandwidth, in which they large per packet... so phonebills can get insanely huge... I had to pay up to 30,000 yen for one bill (300USD~), besides, Japanese people are permanently attached to their phones anyway, therefore the need for constant update of technology.

Why doesn't Japanese phones work in the States? Simple, lack of demand, cost of rollout AND consumer not willing to deal with costs placed on their bills.

Japanese mainly use W-CDMA technology, whereas in America we use CDMA (Verizon,Sprint) and GSM (T-mobile, Cingular). However some of them support both. Basically you find a compatible, unlocked phone, put in your simcard, change some network settings, then you're good to go.
I would say the best unlocked japanese phone at the moment is the Sharp 903sh, so look into it when you get the chance, you won't be disappointed.
