dengue fever...... thats all i know.... sounds exotic tho icon_smile.gif lol
--Kaged--
Dengue fever is an infectious disease carried by mosquitoes and caused by any of four related dengue viruses. This disease used to be called break-bone fever because it sometimes causes severe joint and muscle pain. Health experts have known about dengue fever for more than 200 years.

Dengue fever is found mostly during and shortly after the rainy season in tropical and subtropical areas of

Africa
Southeast Asia and China
India
Middle East
Caribbean and Central and South America
Australia and the South and Central Pacific

During the last part of the 20th century, cases of dengue began to increase in many tropical regions of the world. Epidemics also began to occur more frequently, and to be more severe. In addition to typical dengue, a severe influenza-like disease-dengue hemorrhagic fever-also has been increasing in many parts of the world.

HOW IS DENGUE FEVER TRANSMITTED?

People get dengue virus infections from the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected when they bite infected humans, and later transmit infection to other people they bite. The two main species of mosquito, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, have been responsible for all cases of dengue transmitted in this country.

WHAT KIND OF VIRUS CAUSES DENGUE FEVER?

Dengue fever can be caused by any one of four types of dengue virus: DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, and DEN-4. A person can be infected by at least two, if not all four types at different times during a life span, but only once by the same type.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF DENGUE FEVER?

Symptoms of typical uncomplicated dengue usually start with fever within 5 to 6 days after a person has been bitten by an infected mosquito.

High fever, up to 105 degrees Fahrenheit
Severe headache
Retro-orbital (behind the eye) pain
Severe joint and muscle pain
Nausea and vomiting
Rash
The rash may appear over most of the body 3 to 4 days after the fever begins. A second rash may appear later in the disease.

Interestingly, most children infected with dengue virus never develop typical symptoms.

HOW IS DENGUE FEVER TREATED?

There is no specific treatment for dengue fever, and most people recover completely within 2 weeks. To help with recovery, health care experts recommend

Getting plenty of bed rest.
Drinking lots of fluids.
Taking medicine to reduce fever.
CDC advises people with dengue fever not to take aspirin. Acetaminophen or other over-the-counter pain-reducing medicines are safe for most people.

24 - More than 24 Million Filipinos are anemic
Features

More than 24 million Filipinos, or a huge 30.6 percent of the Philippine population, are now suffering from iron deficiency anemia (IDA).

The Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI), an agency attached to the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), said approximately three out of 10 Filipinos have IDA.

Mostly affected with the deficiency are infants, pregnant and lactating women and older persons.

The Department of Health (DOH) said iron deficiency is the most common cause of nutritional anemia in the Philippines.

FNRI likewise noted that more females than males are afflicted with IDA, except among elder persons where the reverse is observed.

FNRI data show that infants, six months to less than a year, have the highest IDA prevalence rate (56.6 percent), followed by pregnant women (50.7 percent) and lactating women (45.7 percent).

It basically refers to severe lack of iron stored in the body, resulting in low hemoglobin concentration.

It is the most widespread micronutrient deficiency affecting a person's general health and well-being, reproductive performance and work capacity.

The cause of iron deficiency is usually inadequate iron due to lack of food intake or from consumption of wrong foods.

Among non-nutritional causes of IDA, blood loss is the most common, especially among women. DOH pointedout that around 80 percent of iron in the body are in the blood.

Menstruation causes iron loss, making a woman's need for iron greater than that of a man.

Iron stores likewise dwindle during pregnancy and iron losses occur with the blood loss during birth.

The developing fetus draws on maternal iron stores to create stores of its own to last through the first three to six months of life.

This drains the mother,s iron supply which may cause a deficiency that may lead to fetal deaths, prematurity and low birth weight.

Among infants, IDA commonly starts to develop after the age of six months if complementary feeding does not provide sufficient absorbable iron.

The deficiency is common among infants in whom the rate of growth is high and whose diet is dominated by milk that contains little iron.

After the age of six months, infants fed with breast milk substitutes are vulnerable to IDA because cow,s milk is a poor source of iron compared to human milk.

Among school children, the most common cause of anemia other than nutritional deficiency is intestinal parasitism, particularly hookworm infection.

DOH literature indicates that each worm may ingest 0.03 to 0.15 milligram of blood daily.

A person with heavy parasite worm infection would sustain heavy blood loss that is certain to lead to anemia.

According to the Philippine Association of Nutrition (PAN), food fortification and iron supplementation will be less effective if the underlying cause of IDA is hookworm infection.

PAN recommends that strategy for IDA in hookworm-endemic areas should include measures to address concurrently the hookworm infection.

The group said a weekly iron supplementation measure for one to five-year old children should be considered as a policy.

"While iron supplementation in itself is highly effective in reducing anemia, food-based strategies as food fortification and dietary diversification through nutrition education are still recommended as long-term interventions to address the malnutrition problem in the country," PAN noted in its statement.

The daily recommended energy and nutrient intake (RENI) of iron for Filipinos are 0.38 milligram (mg) for infants 0 to six months old; 10 mg for six months to one year; eight to 11 mg for children nine years old and below; 12 mg for males; and 27 mg for females.

For pregnant and lactating, the RENIs are 27 to 38 mg and 27 to 30 mg, respectively.

More Vietnam rice arrives

KORONADAL CITY -- Some 15,000 bags of imported rice from Vietnam arrived Friday at the National Food Authority (NFA) warehouse to augment South Cotabato's rice stocks which were earlier declared to be at the critical level.

Rey Salvatierra, NFA provincial manager, said the new imported rice shipment was part of the province's allocation out of the 600,000 metric tons imported by the NFA central office for the foreseen lean season starting this month to September.

He said they started to transfer the new stocks to their warehouse from the regional warehouse in General Santos City.

"This brings our imported stocks to 25,000 bags and I think these are enough to offset our projected rice shortage," Salvatierra said.

Last week, some 10,000 bags of rice initially arrived at the NFA warehouse here, the first shipment in about two years.

The South Cotabato provincial board earlier issued a resolution prohibiting the entry of imported rice in the province as it reportedly competes with the produce of local farmers.

But last month, the board passed another measure that finally allowed the local NFA to take appropriate actions including importation and to ensure a stable supply of rice especially during lean months.

Salvatierra said Vietnam rice is being sold at P18 per kilo or P900 per 50-kilo sack.

Luisito Mangayayam, NFA chief information officer, said accredited retailers would be allowed to obtain 30 bags at most per week. NFA has 184 retailers, which means it would release 5,520 bags per week.

He said South Cotabato consumes 5,444 bags of rice per day, a big portion of it sold by private traders.

Presently, the price per kilo of locally produced rice is between P21 to P23, much higher than the cost of NFA rice.

Mangayayam assured the NFA would not distribute the imported rice when farmers start harvesting the bulk of their palay by late August.

He said doing otherwise would bring down the farm gate price of palay.

The South Cotabato agriculture office earlier recommended the entry of imported rice in the province as harvests fell early this year due to pest infestation, particularly by rodents and rice tungro virus.

The pest infestation damaged at least 10,000 hectares of corn and rice farms, about 2,000 hectares of which are ready for harvest, worth P71-million.

^^^ Viet Cuong is giving Pi more rice! I hope these people get better and not worst!!!

Actually,Most of the rice that the Philippines imported were from Vietnam , Thailand and China.

the DOH says it's heart diseases.. 98 statistics http://www.doh.gov.ph/data_stat/html/mortal_98.htm

but i think PTB or pulmonary tuberculosis is the most dangerous of the diseases in the Philippines. every child is immunized with a PTB vaccine thereby carrying the organism in a weakened state enabling the immune system to adapt thereby making the Filipinos immune to TB. however, Americans and other nationalities visiting the Philippines can contract the disease obviously because that's not part of their immunization program in their respective countries since they either don't have that kind of disease there or no immunization at all.

traveller's diarrhea is also common.. caused by drinking water you don't know from which source it came from. umm, hepatitis too and typhoid fever.

whew.. it pays to listen to my teachers. embarassedlaugh.gif
