HA NOI — The information and communications technology sector could record earnings of VND60 trillion in 2007, up by more than VND10 trillion from 2006, according to the Ministry of Post and Telematics.

The announcement was made yesterday at a meeting to review the sector’s 2006 performance and discuss the ministry’s plan for 2007 in Ha Noi.

The increase in the market is due to the number of telephone and internet users projected this year.

The ministry hopes to see up to 38 million people using telephones in 2007, an increase of 11 million from the previous year.

This means 43 people out of every hundred will have a phone by the end of 2007.

The number of Internet subscribers is also estimated to increase dramatically. The ministry forecasts that 6 million people will have internet service this year, up 2 million over 2006, which translates to 22 per cent of the population with access to the internet.

"These ambitious targets will help the sector have sufficient momentum to reach its "take off" plan in the 2010-2020 period, when Viet Nam plans to see its information and communications technology sector reach the level of an industrialised country," said Do Trung Ta, the telecommunications minister .

Ta said, in order to reach these targets, the ministry will be looking to re-evaluate the legislation and policies governing this sector while strengthening the co-operation between relevant ministries.

"We will also boost the equitisation process of enterprises operating in the sector to mobilise more capital for development, which will help the sector reach a turnover of US$10 billion in 2010," Ta said.

The legal framework for this kind of development, especially laws relating to foreign investment and Viet Nam’s new WTO membership, is in the works, said Ta.

Records in 2006

At the meeting, the ministry said the information and communications technology sector earned VND49 trillion last year, up 13 per cent over 2005.

This increase accounted for 7.4 trillion of the state’s budget.

As many as 11.7 million new telephone subscribers were registered in 2006, up 113 per cent over 2005 and bringing the total number of telephone subscribers in the country to 27.5 million. Cellphone users accounted for 68.8 per cent of the total.

The number of internet subscribers was up as well. In 2006, there were 4 million people using the internet, m 1.4 million more than in 2005.

Earnings from 720 software companies with over 25,000 staff members were recorded at US$250 million in 2006, with $70 million in software exports, said ministry officials.

The Viet Nam Post and Telecommunication Group (VNPT) remained the top earner in this sector, recording VND38.3 trillion in earnings, followed by Viettel, SPT, and EVN Telecom, securing VND7.1 trillion, VND1.1 trillion, VND1 trillion respectively.

Five other ICT companies including Vishipel, Hanoi Telecom, FPT Telecom, NetNam and VTC accounted for rest of the earnings. — VNS
