WASHINGTON, April 16 (Yonhap) -- A South Korean student was injured in Monday's shooting at Virginia Tech and has been hospitalized, the head of the university's Korean student association said.

Park Chang-min, a student in the civil engineering doctorate program, was in class when he was hit in the arm by the shooter's bullet, according to association president Lee Seung-woo. Park is studying in the U.S. by himself.

The bullet penetrated the arm and scraped the side of the body but did not damage any bones, Lee quoted doctors as saying. Park is expected to be released soon.

There are some 460 students from Korea studying at Virginia Tech undergraduate and graduate schools and an estimated 500 students of Korean descent.

The shooting is the deadliest in U.S. history, with at least 32 people dead, including the shooter who committed suicide.

"I have been calling other members of the student association and were not told of other Korean victims," Lee said.

Park was in the middle of a lecture with 15 or so other classmates when the shooter started firing, Lee quoted him as saying. It wasn't clear how many others survived.

The shooter is said to be a young Asian male, but Lee said chances are low he is a Korean.

"I don't believe any of the Korean students own a gun," he said.

The South Korean embassy dispatched one of its staff members to the university to gather details.

america is fu-ked up. 3 people were supposedly involved inside campus, 2 were arrested, the gunman killed himself.

edit: the gunman was chinese
CJK
well, america can be fuct up, but it wasn't an american that massacred all those people.

it's so sad.
BlueAway
The gunman was a Chinese. Man, its so fu-ked up. I'm so embarassed.
CJK
it's a cowardly disgrace to all asians, since were all damn chinese in non-asian's eyes.

It shouldn't matter what race of person it was. There are lunatics in every ethnic group of people. It only deeply matters to racists who eagerly look for any single possible reason to bash other peoples as a whole.

Well this is the 3rd time a Chinese student went bersek in a US university. It's happened twice before but on smaller scale.

Chinese students are put under a lot of academic pressure by their parents. So combine that with a mentally unstable person, you're bound to get some fu-ked up $hit happening.

In Toronto about a year ago, this chinese guy stepped in front of a subway train. He had a wife and two kids. And he had two PhDs. He killed himself cause he couldnt get a job.

fu-k, this is a depressing evening.
CJK
i imagine it will become harder for chinese students to study in the US.
BlueAway
I'm scared of going to work tomorrow. I work with all white people. I'm the only asian on the entire floor.

I can see the jokes coming:

"don't piss off the chinaman, he's gonna cap our asses"
CJK
I dont think most people know.
It hasn't been publicized much.

They'll just assume it's some crazed trenchcoat teenager or some muslim fundamentalist.

When one person F U C K S up, his entire ethnic group gets blamed for it. Sad but true.
namjanurse7
at first i thought it was a korean student with his kimchi temper
but asians have to watch out because this can backfire
Captain Corea
It's a sad event no matter the race of those involved.

What were the gunmen's motives? Did they just want to go out with a bang?

i agree 100% .... there are crazy people in every race and ethnicity ... so it does not matter if the gunman is chinese or korean etc....

32 kills, dual 9mm, who was this guy chow yun fat?
frozen_korean

So, you figure that he was shooting everyone on purpose, but that he shot the Asian by mistake?

Is it not possible that this guy was just bent and was killing all in his path?
froglee

Here is the latest update. The gun man is Korean, NOT Chinese.

wauw I was pretty shocked when I heard the news!

I thought that it was some crazy american and never thought that a korean that would do. Not that I want to discriminate but if someone would go crazy, I would think it's the american boy than a korean boy...

I'm now less proud on my korean pride..

hope Koreans learned something from this incident.

I meant the fact that the incident was Korean is very sad ,however
I am just pointing out some Koreans attitude before the shooter's national was identified.

Apparently, some notes by the killers indicates he's against rich white kids, and probably can't stand people look him down.. south koreans are known for their ethnic pride.

Cut the bull$hit fight with chinese for later. we got more important things to worry about.

kaizen you need to be calm.

I hardly see any chinese to mock Koreans because of this incident.

Its Koreans like CJK who flame first against Chinese before the shooters national identified.

Second , you are also blind .

I think anti-depressant drugs had a lot to do with this: look at the Columbine killers who were Jewish by the way (the media hid this and made them out to be white neo-Nazis instead of the Jewish supremacists that they actually were) - one or two of the guys were on anti-depressants; Andrea Dwork who killed her five children - she had been on antidepressants; lots of killers have later found to have been on antidepressants or weaning themselves off them - many killers who committed murder-suicide type crimes ... I am surprised nobody is looking into this ... instead they just hand out antidepressants like aspirin to anyone with emotional problems. America is drugged up to its eyeballs. What a messed up place.

And what was the VT president doing letting the students roam the campus freely when there was a killer walking among them? You do not lift a lockdown until the killer is caught. Period. Someone's head needs to roll over this: either the president or the person who told him the killer had been caught if this was the case.

I personally think the police were busy arresting the Chinese campus reporter for being too aggressive in his questioning ie the police were just flaunting their power instead of doing their business properly - trying to find the killer - and somehow the message the president got was that the perp had been caught when it was just the reporter; HIS details were the ones that got leaked to the news media, hence the confusion about the killer's identity - he was a Chinese national etc - but more significantly it meant that the killer was able to keep on killing more than the two he had already killed. Just my theory of what happened.
lilzz
I think the US public at first like to believe the killer is chinese because he's asian and the China Threat in US is really in vogue.
Fu*k that SH*t. Now, a it's Korean is total shock to everybody.

South Korea after all is one US allies in containing China, north Korea.

This thing will have alot of implications economically because South Korea is so dependent on exporting to US ,electronics, cars...etc.

It's sad for the vitims but it's also a wakeup call.

This cho @$$hole guy is a total fu-king disgrace to Koreans, and Asians all together (since whites and blacks can't tell us apart).

My mom was very enraged this morning after we watched our local news, to find out that the suspect was a Korean guy. Not just a Korean guy, but a national FROM Korea.

My mom was ranting and raving how Cho hui looks like a retard, how his lips look like that of an ape, and how this may cause serious backlash against the Korean community living in Fairfax Virginia and the Maryland area.

I hope that guy seriously roasts in hell for what he did.

Not only that, but what about his parents? How the fu-k will their parents ever get to live in their neighborhood again? I'm betting that his parents may end up moving to another neighborhood, or more likely, move back to Korea.

Even if the parents move back to Korea, they will still be Wang-da'ed or ostracized by the Koreans.

I'm pretty sure a $hitload of Korean news stations are talking about that whacko Cho Hui.

I think the Korean-American community need to think about this because it's not the only time a Korean-American has cracked - there was the murder-suicide of a Korean family not that long ago. This family were avid churchgoers. It seems that belonging to a church did not prevent these people doing what they did. Maybe Koreans need to reassess their whole drive to emigrate and what they are doing to their children by thrusting them into a foreign (and very different) culture before they've had time to establish their identity properly - their ethnic identity (and intercar has spoken about this in another thread). I think KAs (I'm including permanent residents in this category) are very lost people personally (as are many emigrants). Many of them believe in delusions and ignore the reality before their eyes: their child is not happy, not fitting in, feels alienated and is heading towards deep depression. The Korean-American community needs to look inward because even before this tragedy occurred I've sensed that all is not well with individuals in the KA community.

Excellent post. The asian community needs to nurture their identity instead of just throwing these young souls to be tainted and eaten up by western culture which is inherently very fracturing, prejudiced, confusing, and hurtful to those of other origins. And for such impressionable and vulnerable young souls away from their roots ammersed in a culture that does not truly accept them it is damaging to their emotions, detrimental to self-esteem and psyche.

He was severely mentally ill. It's innapropriate to bash his looks. It's that type of attitude that makes people get depressed, then mentally ill, and then disasters like the VTech shooting occur.

Cho represented himself, and no one else. Any repercussions by Americans will be in the realm of thought, not actions. Btw, does anyone have any insight into the rash of thoughtless cartoons in SK newspapers before it was known that Cho was a Korean citizen?
